Hp Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0073w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

I've had many computers in the past. This one, however, is the very first I've bought brand new. So far so good! It's going on a couple of years old now and what computer doesn't always need an upgrade?  I'd like to know what upgrades would be best for this computer? I know I need more storage .  8Gigs does not suffice.  More RAM perhaps? She states  that she runs with a 64bit processor.. Does that need to be upgraded as well?  I have not opened her up, yet. I'd like to make sure I know what I'm doing first.

Thank you!

You are welcome, @Crushia!  Thank you for the additional information.

Whenever you want to upgrade your computer to play games the best place to begin is with the system requirements of each game.  Here is a website that I use for that purpose: https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

You can check each game to see if your system meets the minimum.  Of course, an old gamer like me wants to have the settings to Ultra.  I use the Recommended Requirements.

Here are all of the components in your computer on HP PartSurfer: https://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=2HL14AA

Also, here is the Motherboard Specifications page for your computer: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-desktop-pc-690-0000i/19769765/document/c0599...

You can look at the sections titled "Processor upgrade information" and "Memory upgrade information".  There is a list of compatible processors and all of the information on which memory to use for any upgrades.

The i7-9700F would be a great upgrade for the processor: https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i7-9th-gen-core-i7-9700f/p/N82E16819118058

It is the most reasonably priced of all of the new models.

As for the memory, I recommend at least 16 GB.  This will give you a nice system performance boost from 8 GB.  Here is the memory that is recommended by Crucial Memory: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-690-0073w

If Crucial recommends their memory it is guaranteed to work.  You can contact their Tech Support to answer any questions that you might have about their memory.  I suggest that you use CPU-Z to find the manufacturer and timings of the current memory: https://download.cnet.com/CPU-Z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html

You can use this information to determine if Crucial memory will be compatible with the current memory.  Not all memory plays nice together.  If it is not compatible you will have to replace the current 8 GB, also.

I don't recommend that you consider upgrading the video card at this time.  I would continue to use it unless you see signs that it is not working well enough for your games.

Last, but not least, we come to the M.2, SSD.  I recommend one with at least 1 Tb.  Here is one that should work with your motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-pro-1tb/p/N82E16820147694

The best way to transition from the old M.2 to the new M.2 is to use Samsung Data Migration software using a USB M.2 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Converter-Portable-Support-Windows/dp/B07VVNGYFV.

You would install it on the current M.2 and run it.  It will ask for the Target drive and you will select the new M.2.  Once the drive is cloned you would go into the BIOS/UEFI and set the new M.2 as the the first boot.

Another solution to your problem would be an external hard drive for storage.  I use two of them with my system.  You would have to check to see if Utomik allows you to install games on a USB device.

I know this is a lot of information, but I want to give you an idea of what can be done.  Now, you have to decided which options are worth it.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

@Crushia , welcome to the Community.

Before I begin spending your money, I would like to have a better understanding of how you use the computer.  What games do you play?  What programs do you run regularly?  Please be specific.  This will tell me if upgrades are necessary.  I like to spend money only if it is necessary.

Hi,

Thank you for responding to my email. Honestly, I use the computer for games. I play games from the site, Utomik.  So I'm constantly downloading and running out of storage. I play games like Diablo, Darksiders, and then slow it down with games of solitaire or hidden objects. I do have programs such as Microsoft Office/word.

I do know that there is a bunch of stuff that I could remove. Like all the excess BS that HP has installed that came with the computer. I just haven't because it's been so long since I've done software repair and I don't want to remove anything that could cause me trouble in the long run.

I hope I answered your questions completely.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for all of the information. You have been a great help.  Glad you're the expert.  😊

So, the SSD and the memory is what you would recommend? I guess my question would be,  Do you you suggest taking it to a shop to have this transition or a very out of practice, haven't changed anything on any computer in a large number of years, do it herself? Lol, I guess I was looking for a confidence boost, or a "Sure, you can do it because it will cheaper."  Obviously, answered my own question.  Thank you again , very much.  Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

@Crushia

You are very welcome!

I believe that you can do it.  There are numerous videos online that will show you how to upgrade the processor and memory.  The processor is a bit tricky, but with the right help you can get it done.  The SSD is the easiest of all upgrades and will make a lot of difference in the boot process.

Crucial's Tech Support has always been very helpful when I have contacted them.  They will make certain that you get the correct memory.

Just make certain that you either use a wrist strap to eliminate electro-static discharge: https://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9B-99-261-005&source=region&nm_mc=KNC-Googl...

You should touch bare metal inside of the case, also.

Good luck!
