Z600
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an old Z600 with a fairly fresh install of Win7 on it. I came across a PCIe SSD that I thought I would try. However, I can't seem to get much working with it. The model is E203413, which is the CAN ICES-3(b)/nmb-3(b) model. The drive doesn't show up in my BIOS. Supposedly, there are some drivers that I can install, though I can't seem to find them on HP's site. I also read a lot of forum posts about other PCIe drives, but nothing seemed to make it work: moving slots, messing with the BIOS settings.

Anyone get this drive to work with a Z600, have any advice on how to do it?

@DaveZ600,

 Is it an HP Z Turbo drive 256GB PCIe SSD  ??

You will also need to state the exact model of that 600... ie 620 or 640.

Yes, HP manufacturer. The adapter card says "Model MS-4365" on it, thought it has some storage chips and a big heat sink on the non-solder side of the board.

Manual, specs, and driver info.   Does require specific BIOS levels to be seen. See manual.

That looks about right, thought all I have is the hardware, and whatever model numbers are on it. I don't have any packaging that tells me it's a Turbo Drive or what capacity, etc. I was hoping that thr bios (or perhaps the Windows device manager) would tell me, but no such luck.

Anyway, assuming your link is for the same product, then the install manual says that it works witn Z620s and Z640s, but doesn't mention Z600s.

From what you are describing, you have a HP Z Turbo Drive G2. As I remember, this card requires PCI-e 3,0 x4 . A Z600 can only support PCI-E 2.0 x4. The HP Z Turbo Drive G1 has no heat sink, and might work in a Z600. I have never tried it.

I tried the HP Z Turbo Drive G1.... no success. Has anyone tried a pcie ssd through sata? Maybe using a sata pcie m.2 with a Marvell 88SS9293 controller?

This thread might be helpful.

Basically, you need some sort of AHCI/Legacy Bios support in order to use a M2 drive with your Z600.

The Kinston HyperX Predator is one of the very few, if not the only one, with an Option ROM supporting BIOS.

You may also want to take a look at the OWC website. They offer some SSD solutions for the old MacPro 4.1 and 5.1, which have been reported to work with the HP Z600 and Z800 > Both the Mac Pros and HP Z600/800 are based on the LGA1366 platform for Xeon 5500/5600.
