Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have an older desktop computer that is running very slow. I would like to update the processor but do not know how. I have an AMD Athlon II 170 U processor for a windows 7 Compaq presario computer. My question is what kind of processor do I need and where can I find one to see if I can speed up my computer.  Could somebody please tell me what processor I would need and where to find one. Thanks.

Harold

You are welcome, @rogie07!  Thank you for the additional information.

Here is the Product Specifications page for the computer: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/compaq-presario-cq5600-desktop-pc-series/4269863/model/4300410/...

If you look at the section titled "Processor/Processor upgrade information" there is a list of compatible processors.  These have been fully tested to assure they are compatible with the motherboard.  Make certain that the one you buy is 95W.

You will have to search online to buy one of them.  There are many guides online to help you with the install of the processor.

@rogie07 , welcome to the Community.

What is the Product Number of the computer? I need this information to review the specifications of it. Please don't furnish the Serial # or other personal information. You can find the Product Number at the bottom of the page when you open HP Support Assistant.

You might give ebay a try.  They normally have a lot of older processors for sale.  Otherwise, it would be difficult to know where you would find it.
