Just found the following message. Is it possible for me to replace it? No experience dealing with something like this.

The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

Continued operation is not reconmended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss or possible system damage. The system will shutdown in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key

System Fan (90B)

ENTER - Continue Startup

Thank you!

Hi  @sm440

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how concerning it can be to see a System Fan (90B) error message during startup. I'm glad you contacted us before attempting any repairs.

To better assist you, could you kindly provide:

  • The full HP product model number or product name - click here for steps
  • Did the error appear suddenly, or were there any symptoms beforehand such as increased fan noise, overheating, or unexpected shutdowns?
  • Does the fan appear to spin when you power on the device?

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset - Click here for steps
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Disconnect the power adapter and any external devices.
    • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect power and start the system.
  2. Check Air Vents
    • Ensure the air vents are free from dust and debris.
    • Use compressed air to gently clean the ventilation openings if available.
  3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics  - Click here for steps
    • Turn off the computer.
    • Power it on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
    • Select Component Tests > Fan and run the test.
    • Share the results if any failure ID is displayed.
  4. Check BIOS Updates
    • If the system allows startup, verify whether a BIOS update is available for your model from HP Support.

Regarding your question about replacing the fan yourself: in many HP desktops and notebooks, a fan can be replaced; however, the difficulty level varies by model. I would recommend to have it replaced with the help of the HP technician only in order to avoid damages to the notebook.

once you identify the failing fan, simply look on the back of the fan for it's model number most pc fans can be sourced on eBay amazon newegg and so on

if your bios does not show the fan speeds free programs like ada64 or HWinfo64 will

based on your post it appears that the front or rear fan is the source of the error msg you can openn the case panel while the system is powered up and watch the fan(s) a failing fan will usually not spin or spin very slow

folow the fan wire and note the location of the wire end and gently grasp the end's connector and gently pull it off the 4 pin header
