HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop PC TG01-0000i (8BG56AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to upgrade the CPU cooler in my prebuilt desktop. However, I am experiencing issues because of the proprietary build. My main issue is the CPU cooler backplate on the lga1200 being integrated with the CPU socket retention. I've provided a reference image. Most CPU coolers come with their own mounting bracket (also provided reference image) where the holes for the CPU socket are too big because the motherboard is supposed to have the socket retention backplate (also provided a reference image circled in red). I cannot find a way to replace it without having a loose CPU socket. They don't sell the socket anymore to get the individual back plate as a replacement. Are there any coolers that work with the proprietary hp backplate? I'm replacing it because the stock CPU cooler is too small so it runs at high speeds to keep the CPU cool and can get loud.

@lost777,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, you can install a decent aftermarket non-HP CPU cooler in your TG01 PC, even keeping HP's 'alternative' CPU bracket and all!

However, in order to install a Noctua, ID-COOLING, a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 90 SE as I did in my HP Pavilion TP01-3003w upgrade project, etc. aftermarket CPU cooler, you'll have to improvise a little bit, as shown & explained in these helpful YouTube instructional videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5RUVrYV0Z8&t=573s&ab_channel=TechNitWit

and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXVlPZ871OA&t=363s&ab_channel=FastidiousFoo.

Very doable, and before applying thermal grease to your processor, doublecheck that the heatsink is securely held (no play!) against the CPU.

Kind Regards,

Thank you very much for your help. I was near ordering a new motherboard, case, and psu for over $300. Saved me just in time.
