just to report, that just before heading to the store to return the Omen, I thought of moving the 1080 card in the Omen, to my regular desktop PowerSpec mid-size tower with the Zotac 1070 AMP...

 

and the 1080 failed again the Fire Strike Stress Test!

 

so, I am led to conclude that the issue is less of a case design but a graphic card design; my money is on heat throttling of the card. so maybe a BIOS update of the card including fan profile could help

 

you think this is something tech support could help or rather nvidia or the maker of the card?

Try that EVGA app that I had mentioned. Crank up the fan rpm then try your test.

@Big_Dave happy to report, your suggestion did the trick.

 

I downloaded the EVGA tool, picked teh aggresive fan curve, and viola. stress test passed.

 

I just have to live with a louder chassis, but small price to pay.
