i have a hp envy dv7 laptop with 6 g of memory  two slots one with a 4gb card and one slot with 2 gb card. i can't find how much i can add or the max the laptop will handle.  any ideas would help

Chapter 1, page 5 has the memory upgrade information.

 

Your notebook can support up to 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600 memory.

 

A suggested 16 GB memory kit:

What's the full model number or product number of your notebook?

 

There are dv7 notebooks that can support 2 x 4 GB or 2 x 8 GB of memory depending on the model number, and it's anybody's guess at this point without having that information.
