Hello i installed all the latest drivers like mainboard drivers and so on. everything is up to date and i installed an Kingston Fury Renegade 4TB PCIE 4.0 NVME M2 to the remaining m2 slot between the cpu and the gpu with an passive cooler and even right now with an active cooling system which is running with a small vent. The temperature is (crystaldiskinfo tool) at 34c in idle mode and when i play games which are installed on that m2 drive it gets to 40 50 so no problem i guess, but....
if i move data through steam or even through the explorer from one sdd to this ssd then after a while the m2 ssd just freezes the operation or slows it down to almost zero. folder and files above 80gb will take then 5 days. even if i start a download in steam the m2 instantly goes up with the download rate to 400 500mbits and after a few seconds its 0 and again freeze, if i tell steam to uninstall or stop it i get the message "full capacity" or "busy" in german its "ausgelastet". it seems like the m2 work for normal operations but when it comes to use his full power it goes in freeze mode. if i turn down the computer then, the computer stays on but the screens are off, only a hard reset will power the computer completly off.
i tried to check in bios if i can set something but this omen computer has a basic bios where u cant change anything and only see the hardware ssd which are installed. even on the kingston website i can see that this m2 ssd2 is compatible with my computer.
what is going on? can you please help me? i guess there is a configuration problem between the 4tb m2 and the computer, everything else working fine, only

i found the problem. the manufacturers of the motherboard are crazy, the slot is between a geforce rtx 3080 and the cpu, i tried active sinks and passive sinks and nothing could handle it. either the heat or the chipset of the motherboard has trouble to handle such a massive fast m2 with 4tb and 7300mb s reading and writing. i ordered an pci express card with passive sink from a known manufacturer and placed it behind the geforce on the last pci slot and the m2 is working without any issues. idle temp is 22c and if it comes to downloads it goes max 40c and has no crashes. even the non quick formatting worked well, i guess the m2 slot on the motherboard is for 1tb or less m2 cards which dont produce so much heat or the chipset of the mainboard cant even handle that thing.
i just downloaded today like 500 gig of game data to it and no issues anymore!

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
OK, your issue with the Kingston Fury Renegade M.2 NVMe SSD freezing or slowing down during large file transfers could stem from several factors. Stating known facts, here's a systematic approach to troubleshoot and resolve it:
1. Check Slot Specifications
- Compatibility: Confirm that the secondary M.2 slot supports the full bandwidth needed for the Fury Renegade SSD (PCIe Gen4 x4). If the slot only supports Gen3 or fewer lanes, performance will be significantly limited. ☑
- Manual Check: Review the HP OMEN 40L GT21-0016ng specifications or motherboard manual to verify the slot's capabilities. ☑
2. Thermal Throttling
- Heat Management: NVMe SSDs can throttle performance when they overheat. Check if the Fury Renegade SSD is equipped with a heatsink and ensure proper airflow in your system. ☑
- Monitoring: Use tools like CrystalDiskInfo or HWMonitor to check SSD temperatures during file transfers. Temperatures above 70–80°C can lead to throttling. ☑
3. Firmware Updates
- SSD Firmware: Ensure the Kingston Fury Renegade SSD has the latest firmware. Visit Kingston's website for firmware updates and instructions. ☑
- Motherboard BIOS: Update your motherboard's BIOS to the latest version. Sometimes, BIOS updates include fixes for NVMe compatibility issues:
4. Driver Updates
- Update the NVMe drivers through Kingston's website or install the latest storage controller drivers from HP or Intel (depending on the chipset).
- Consider installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver if supported.❗️
5. Windows Settings
- Write Cache Settings: Enable write caching for the SSD.
- Right-click the SSD in Disk Management → Properties → Policies.
- Check "Enable write caching on the device."
- TRIM Command: Run the TRIM optimization manually.
- Go to Defragment and Optimize Drives → Select the SSD → Click Optimize.
6. Test the SSD in Another Slot/System
- Move the M.2 NVMe SSD to the primary M.2 slot (if possible) and test again.
- Alternatively, test the SSD in another system to rule out issues with the M.2 NVMe SSD itself.
7. Run Diagnostics
- Use Kingston’s M.2 NVMe SSD Manager to perform diagnostic tests on the drive.❗️
- Run benchmarks using tools like CrystalDiskMark to compare results with expected speeds (~7,300 MB/s read and ~7,000 MB/s write for PCIe Gen4).
8. Power Supply
- High-performance SSDs can draw significant power, especially during large file transfers. Ensure your power supply unit (PSU) can handle the load along with other components. What wattage is your power supply?
9. File System and Partition Issues
- If the drive is formatted with an improper block size or has partition alignment issues, performance can suffer.
- Reformat the drive with NTFS (or exFAT for large files) and ensure proper partition alignment.
10. Check for Background Processes
- Ensure no other intensive processes (like antivirus scans or background disk activities) are running during transfers.
Next Steps
- If none of these steps resolve the issue, your M.2 NVMe SSD might be defective. Contact Kingston's support for further assistance or consider an RMA.
- As a temporary measure, consider using the primary M.2 NVMe M.2 slot or another storage solution for large file transfers.
Let me know how it goes or if you need clarification on any step!

To 1 it says on the hp site:
- (1) M.2 socket 1, key A, type 2230 for WLAN
(2) M.2 socket 3, key M, type 2280 for SSDs (PCIe Gen 4.0 x4)
I have no idea where to find the manual, even i cant find a picture of the motherboard to see where is which time of m2 socket.
to 2: i use crystaldiskinfo and its always between 36 and 55c and it has an active heat sink with vent
to 3: iam running kingson ssd manager and it says firmware is up to date, i even checked the versions of the firmware from the kingston site with the ones which are shown
Motherboard bios is up to date too
to 4: i just installed now RST and where can i find drivers for the kingston? isnt it the firmware?
to 5: write cache settings was already enabled but i cant even optimize or analyze in defrag the m2?!?!? its greyed out! so i cant trim it!
6 is impossible the other m2 ssd is my c drive and even it does not fit there because its not enough space to add it
7 run diagnostics in kingston ssd manager, there is no diagnostics, you can only tab to health and refresh the data which is shown there and it says in the health overwiev: Failures non, Warnings none, Overall helathy
ill check the other steps now

to 8 its:
Internal 800 W Power Supply Unit
Total wattage: 800 W
Efficiency: 90% (Gold level)
With (2) x 8-pin graphic connector for graphics card
to 9 i just formatted it to ntfs in fast formatting
10 nothing background idle the heat goes to 32c
and right now i started crystal diskmark with an 8gig file and the results are:
read 7030mbs and then the m2 sd was killed again i think because write is at 3,56
the other tests are not done since the m2 is lagging now again but i already moved alot of data like 700gb manually step by step in to the m2 so it can write faster except its overloaded like right now again.
from all your lists are 2 things that i still can do, search for drivers (not firmware) for the m2, i dont think they are drivers but i can check, and 2nd step would be a complete format of the disk in ntfs or exfat in normal speed but i dont know what i can do else, i need definetly the manual of the mainboar, if u can find it let me know.

First of all, according to the specs, your OMEN by HP 40L GT21-0016ng is fitted with the BlizzardOC motherboard, which has two (2) Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD slots:
[EDIT:] Yes, your PCIe x4 slot would be very suitable to use a PCIe 4.0 x4 to M.2 NVMe SSD adapter for a third M.2 NVMe SSD:

@Jiggyjones wrote:The formatting without the quickmode clicked on is impossible, the m2 kills itself at 50% and then its gone from explorer
This is a real problem. Please check windows event log for errors.
I assume you have your existing games on the C drive and you have started moving all the game libraries to the other SSD.
