hwinfo identifies board as msi amethyst m, an hp oem board for the pavilion
on boot, motherboard reads 2815mb memory, 4gb installed. hwinfo reports 4gb installed. oper syst ready only 2.7gb
this is a hardware issue with the board/bios, and is independent of operating system. neither msi nor i can fix this problem. the board is advertised to support 4gb, but it is not

Thank you for the information.
Yes, the motherboard supports up to 4GB, however, the actual available memory may be less when you are using a 32-bit operating system.
Was the computer shipped with 4GB RAM?
What is the product number for your computer?
I await a response at your earliest convenience.

the solution that you posted on 02-09-2019 01:56 PM was completely inadequate
this is what i did to solve the problem: i upgraded my motherboard to an asrock itx b450, the processor to an amd 2700, the memory to g.skill 3200, a ssd samsung evo m.2, i salvaged the old video card, an evga 750 ti, the power supply, a kingwin fanless 550, and the hdd, a wd 1 tb. i installed debian 9 on my m.2 while unplugging my data drive - the 1tb wd.
this is the solution to the problem i faced. this actually solved every problem that was wrong with my old configuration, including the memory problem
