VRAM Limitation Issue on HP ProDesk 600 G3 Microtower (MT)
Since your BIOS automatically disables the integrated GPU (iGPU) when a discrete GPU is installed, the issue is likely software-related rather than the iGPU interfering with VRAM allocation.
Steps to Fix VRAM Allocation Issues Before Upgrading CPU:
1. Set GT 1030 as Preferred GPU in Nvidia Control Panel:
Open Nvidia Control Panel (Right-click on Desktop → Select Nvidia Control Panel).
Go to Manage 3D settings (Left panel).
Under the Global Settings tab, set Preferred Graphics Processor to High-performance Nvidia processor. Reference: Manage 3D Settings (reference).
Click Apply.
For individual games:
Switch to the Program Settings tab.
Click Add, then select the game (e.g., Until Dawn).
Under "Select the preferred graphics processor for this program", choose High-performance Nvidia processor.
Click Apply.
2. Manually Increase VRAM Usage in Games:
Some games impose a so-called soft VRAM limit based on detected hardware. If the game doesn’t fully utilize your GT 1030’s 4GB VRAM, try these:
A. Check In-Game Graphics Settings:
Increase texture quality: Lower settings may limit VRAM usage.
Disable "Auto" settings: Manually set VRAM-dependent features like texture filtering, shadows, and anti-aliasing.
Enable DirectX 11/12 or Vulkan (if supported): Some APIs handle VRAM better.
B. Force VRAM Allocation via Configuration Files (Advanced):
Some games store settings in external files where you can manually adjust VRAM usage.
Find the Game Config File
For many games, this is in:
C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\GameName\ConfigExample for Until Dawn:
Locate GameUserSettings.ini (or similar file).
Edit the File
Open the .ini or .cfg file with Notepad.
Look for lines like:
VideoMemorySize=2048Change it to:
VideoMemorySize=4096Save and restart the game.
Launch the Game and Test Performance
If the game still doesn’t use more VRAM, it may be hardcoded to recognize your GT 1030 as a 2GB GPU based on Nvidia's database.
