Yes, you can remove the Intel Optane memory, and install a NVMe SSD in its place.

It should run at around a max speed of 3,500 MBPS as long as you get one that indicates that is the max speed it can support.

There is a procedure to uninstall the Intel Optane memory.

You can't just remove it and be done with it.

See the last two sections of the info at the link below.

HP PCs - Installing and Using Intel Optane | HP® Customer Support

HP has the steps out of order.

You would first disable the Intel Optane memory in the Intel RST software.

Then you would disable it in the BIOS if your PC has a setting to do so.

Hi:

Your PC has the Intel Z390 chipset.

OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop PC - 875-1040st CTO Product Specifications and Configurable Options | HP®...

The Intel chipset specs indicate the PCI Express revision is 3.0.

That means no matter what you do, the WB BLACK 4TB SN850X NVME will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds in any of your PC's PCIe/M.2 expansion slots.

I wouldn't be able to advise you as to whether or not you would be better off getting an external hard drive.

i think it would be way easier to just get a internal 4 TB nvme ssd gen 4 , can i take out the octane card with the octane app not working been trying to fix with no solution yet . every time i try to open it says windows cannot find c/programfiles/intel(r)rapid storage technology/astorui.exe make sure it is typed correctly and try again should i fix this issue then do the uninstall of the optane ? can i have the internal nvme ssd with 2 hard drives or should i remove 1 as well ? i think i will get the crucial p3 4TBpci gen 3 or 4 3d nand nvme m.2 ssd it is half the price of the WD . thanks again if you can help

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to fix that problem.

I don't know how the PC is working if the Intel Optane memory isn't configured with the IRST software.

I  recommend you start a new discussion on that issue.
