I would like to add a 256 gb SSD drive on a M.2 PCIe X1 adapter card into the pcie X1 slot on my desktop,
Will I be able to boot from this SSD drive wjthout complication once OS is installed?

@rlamont, welcome to the forum.
I don't believe that HP computers will boot from a PCIe x1 slot. You could certainly add a SATA, SSD as a boot drive, however. I have a M.2 and SATA, SSD in the same Omen X as boot drives. I can see a very slight difference when booting from the M.2 SSD.
From my experience, I believe that you would be pleased the the SATA, SSD's performance.

I've allready installed a sata ssd that I can boot from, very happy with the speed,
Linux mint 18.3 boots in 12 seconds.
I feel a bit disapointed for not being able to boot from a m.2 ssd drive pcie x1 adapter card
