want to speed up access and productivity but am flooded by hype around internal ssds; what physically will fit, for starters?

There is no option to install an internal SSD without adding some sorts of adapters. There are few options
(a) Install normall SSD to replace the exising HDD; This could be the cheapest way and easiest way, all you need is a new SSD drive and bracket to hold the SSD (not over $10) because SSD's are smaller (physically) in comparision to normal HDD's for dsktop. The following articles may help

(b) Install PCIe SSD: This is another option but more expensive and a bit harder to install
