Just bought s/h HP ENVY Curved All-in-One PC 34-b0xx .Original keyboard is missing, original mouse is present and working.
The original wireless keyboard and mouse seem to connect wirelessly to in internal dongle on the m/board, but I can't get a 3rd party keyboard to pair with it.
I would like to understand why this is so.

As best as I could to ascertain the part number for your keyboard, I believe it is HP p/n: 859453-031, as referenced here: HP PartSurfer. To be 100% sure that this is indeed the correct p/n, I would need the full SKU/model number of your AIO.
This is what this part looks like:
And could be purchased in the UK: HP Pavilion Envy Omen Stream External Wireless Keyboard Mouse Kit 801523-031 | eBay [MPN: 801523-031, 4CE99AA#ABU, 801523-032, 801524-031, 859453-031], but it would be an expensive "fix", so to speak. And even if it is identical to your missing original keyboard, there is a chance that it may not pair with your PC.
The reason why 3rd party wireless keyboards don't pair with the internal dongle of your AIO, in a nutshell, is because HP made it proprietary.
You may be better off purchasing a new wireless/mouse combo, such as this example: HP 230 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo Set, 2.4 GHz Wireless USB-A Nano Receiver, Up to 1600 dpi, ..., which would be much more affordable too.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,
