ProDesk 600 G1 Sff
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My system has 12Gb of memory and I am trying to upgrade to 32Gb (the max).  I bought OWC 32Gb upgrade kit (2 x 16GB) and it didn't work.  Get 5 beeps at power up...after the 3rd time the fan turns on and starts to go through the roof.  I returned that memory and bought Komputer Bay upgrade kit (2 x 16GB) and I am getting the same results.

If I put the 12Gb (4GB/8GB) modules back in everything works fine.  Having a hard time believing that 2 sets of memory are DOA.  I tried each 16gb module at a time...all 4 modules return the same 5 beeps.

The memory is: DDR3 PC3L 1600MT 12800 C11 non-ECC, unbuffered 204 pin - which is indentical specs to my exsiting memory.

If i put the 8Gb in the first slot and a 16GB in the second slot, the system boots but seemingly is not seeing the 16Gb module. I then reached out to HP support and they sent me a link to documentation for my product - which looks correct.  However it says my system has 4 module slots...but in fact it only has two.  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03846648

What am I missing here?

@rolinger1,

Thank you for such a detailed inquiry.  Your problem is not unique.

Memory is like an old filter for your car..  Each is specific to the model.

Crucial has specified these will work with your system.

You are missing the fact that your HP board does NOT support XMP profiles...you when you are buying RAM Kits...you better make sure you check the specs first...so the desire speeds you want to use is set on the DIMM specs and its approved by JEDEC or plug and play...and not XMP.

Try a kit that has standard JEDEC speeds and it will work!

Good luck!

It turns out my computer is NOT a SFF...its a ProDesk 600 G1 Desktop Mini (DM).  The specs on it only allow for 16Gb...all along I kept think it was a SFF and all the documentation was reflecting it could have up to 32Gb.  The memory probably worked, but the mini can't take more than 16GB.  Never would have bought it if I had known that.  I thought 32Gb was low but was ok with it...but 16GB...ugh!

I have not read your motherboard specs...its true my board only accepts 32GB max...when the chipset in fact supports 64 and the CPU is able to handle 128GB so...those are chipset and board limitations..
