HP Compaq 8200 Elite Small Form Factor PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

The CD burner in my HP Elite 8200 SFF desktop is no longer burning reliably.  I suspect the laser is going out.

Any suggestions on where to procure a replacement CD burner (that's also a DVD reader)?

This machine is running Win 7 Pro, and I use Nero to burn CD's.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, @navaho42

I have two HP 8200 Elite CMT's and here are the eBay listings for the OEM DVD-RW drives that came with the model...

I appears that it is just a normal 5.25" DVD/CD drive.  Very common to replace with most any 5.25" SATA DVD/CD drive.

Here are some examples:

Hi Paul,

Awesome, thanks for that eBay link!  I just ordered one.

One last question, if you don't mind...

I tried removing the OEM DVD-RW from my HP 8200 Elite CMT and ran into a roadblock. I pushed the green lever and was able to pivot the DVD-RW out of the chassis, but then got stuck.  It appears there are 4 screws in the side that glide in grooves, so after unplugging the power and signal cables it should just slide out.   But it didn't.  Is there a button or lever somewhere that needs to be pressed?

Best,

-Ted

Hi The OldMan,

Thanks for that newegg link!

I'll use that if the OEM eBay unit (Paul posted a link to) doesn't pan out.

-Ted

You're very welcome.

It's been a while since I played with mine, and the procedure is different on the CMT.

I recommend that you read the service manual for the instructions to remove the DVD drive.

Chapter 8 starting on page 181.

Oh wow, that service manual is AWESOME!  I had no idea such a detailed document exists.  Thank you so much!

And page 181 did indeed solve my problem.

I thought I needed to push the green button in order to pivot the DVD drive unit out of the chassis. Turns out it pivots without the green button, but... I needed to press the green button in order to release the catch which holds the drive in its rails.

I'm all set now.  Thanks a million!
