I would like to replace my PC's m.2 SSD with a larger 1 TB model but I am worried I may need to repurchase Windows for the PC if I do. what I would like to know is if Windows on my PC is stored on the motherboard or SSD. Thank you

Hi:
Operating systems are installed on the hard drive.
However, you do not need to purchase a new license for Windows since the product key is encrypted in your PC's BIOS.
You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to make a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC on the new SSD.
Here is an info link for how to use the utility. You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive for this.
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support
You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.
HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps
You can make the recovery media now on your PC before you replace the drive.

Ok so will it automatically apply my product key when I reinstall windows 11? Also do I need the hp cloud recovery app for the process or does it just save me from having to reinstall my graphics driver which is basically the only thing I need to reinstall as far as drivers I think.

Yes, to the product key being automatically applied.
Yes, to the Cloud recovery tool only being needed if you want to install the original HP factory image.
If you want to use the Microsoft tool to create plain Windows installation media and then install the drivers yourself, that will be fine too.
