Hi Tony_atfpodcast,

Here are a couple of documents that will help;

HP Z420 Quickspecs

HP Z420 User Guide

HP Z420 Maintenace and Service Guide

The Quickspecs lists all compatible Xeon CPU's with their clock speeds, core count, etc. I would probably opt for the E5-1680 v2 CPU - 3.4GHz on all cores (if turbo boost is enable) and 3.9GHz single threaded.

it says the  E5-2687W v2  has to use liquid  hp liquid cooling options but I don't see that anywhere.  Even in the parts store

The one I listed in my previous post is the correct cooler/part numbers for the HP Z420 workstation.

Did you read the review at the bottom of the ebay listing you posted a link to, not exactly positive. I also found this link showing the actual compatibility of the liquid cooler you have listed, i.e. This is for HP desktop PC's, not HP workstations.

hmmm the 1680 will work with the liquid cooling or air?  better then the other one?  my boot block date is  3-6-13

As you have the 2013 boot block date, you can install the E5-1680 v2 CPU. It will work with either the standard HP air cooler or the liquid cooler previously mentioned. The v2 CPU also supports 1866MHz RAM.

Now I been seeing more RDIMM then UDIMM.  does it matter what one I use even though the specs say UDIMM? I have the v3.90 bios so I was hoping it could use more chips. lol
