The BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, controls communication between the operating system and the computer’s hardware. Updating the BIOS is also known as flashing the BIOS.
A BIOS update may be recommended when:
An available update resolves a specific issue.
The update improves computer performance.
The current BIOS does not support a hardware component.
The current BIOS does not support a Windows upgrade.
HP recommends installing an available BIOS update.
Note : Only install BIOS updates provided by HP. An incorrect or interrupted BIOS installation can prevent the computer from starting or being recovered. If the computer is managed by an organization or IT service, contact the IT administrator before updating the BIOS.
Before downloading or installing a BIOS update:
Identify the computer’s product name and number.
Note the processor name.
Check the currently installed BIOS version.
If multiple BIOS updates are available, identify the computer’s system board or motherboard information.
For an IT-managed computer, confirm that the update is compatible with the organization’s deployment environment.
Do not turn off the computer or interrupt the BIOS update after installation begins.
1: Update the BIOS Using HP Image Assistant
This option applies to supported HP business computers.
Download and install the latest version of HP Image Assistant.
Open HPImageAssistant.exe.
Select the Download SoftPaqs tab.
Under Create My Products List, select Create.
Select the operating system and the appropriate HP computer model.
Select Apply.
Under Select from My Products List, select the applicable computer.
Under Get SoftPaqs, select Analyze.
On the Available SoftPaqs tab, filter the available components by BIOS.
Select the available BIOS package, and then select Download.
Select Download and extract SoftPaqs, and then start the process.
If no BIOS component appears in the results, the BIOS is already up to date or no applicable update is available through HP Image Assistant.
2: Update the BIOS from the BIOS Setup Utility
Some supported HP business desktop computers can check for an update directly from the BIOS.
Turn on or restart the computer.
Immediately press F10 repeatedly until the BIOS Setup Utility opens.
Select Check HP.com for BIOS Updates.
Follow the on-screen instructions to check for an available update.
If an update is available, follow the instructions displayed on the screen to install it.
3: Update the BIOS Manually from Windows
Use this method when Windows starts normally and a BIOS update is available for the specific computer model.
Gather the computer’s product name, product number, processor name, and current BIOS version.
Visit HP’s driver and software download page for the computer.
Locate the available BIOS update.
Confirm that the BIOS update applies to the exact computer model and system board.
Select Download.
If HP Download and Install Assistant appears, select Download only, and then proceed to the next screen.
Save the BIOS update file to the computer.
Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the BIOS update.
During installation, the computer might:
Restart more than once.
Temporarily turn off the display.
Produce beeping sounds.
Change cooling-fan speed.
Display a blinking power light.
These behaviors can occur while the BIOS update is being applied. Do not interrupt the process.
4: Update the BIOS Using a USB Flash Drive
Use this method when Windows does not start. A second working computer with internet access is required.
Requirements
A second computer with internet access.
A USB flash drive.
The product name and number of the affected computer.
The processor name.
The current system BIOS version.
The SKU or product number.
The system board ID.
Procedure
On the working computer, locate the BIOS update for the affected computer on HP’s support website.
Confirm that the BIOS package matches the computer model and system board.
Download and save the BIOS update file.
Open the downloaded BIOS installer.
Use the options provided by the HP BIOS Update and Recovery utility to create a BIOS recovery USB flash drive.
Connect the prepared USB flash drive to the affected computer.
Follow the BIOS update or recovery instructions displayed by the HP utility.
BITLOCKER WARNING: If BitLocker protection is enabled, the BitLocker recovery key might be required after updating the BIOS. Make sure the recovery key is available before beginning the update. HP warns that Windows might need to be reinstalled if the required key is unavailable or is not recognized.
