Pavilion p6650z
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am attempting to boot from a flash drive, but any attempts to access the BIOS in any way just leave me with a black screen. I waited close to an hour on one attempt. However, CTRL-ALT-DEL still restart the box. My logo screen options are ESC for boot menu, F9 for diagnostics (just a static screen with 5 or 6 items. This actually works but has no effect on any settings, etc.), F10 for setup, and F11 for System Recovery (all attempts to use have failed. I am using a USB keyboard and I suspect that I need a legacy PS2 connection to use.)

None of this have worked but F9, and that choice, as enumerated above, is ineffective. Rebooting with the USB flash drive in place has no effect on the boot process.

I am using a Pavilion series P6000

p6650z (XM546AV)

I am also dual booting with Ubuntu Linux 19.04 and Windows 64 bit.

Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

Thank you for your response, but I solved the problem after searching other sites and forums. I was using a dual output video card and changed which port I was using. I was then able to see the menus and use my computer normally. I now have win10 and linux 19.10 both working like champs.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.  Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06162205 to Use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)

Note: we don't support dual boot, and I suggest to reinstall windows using the HP recovery media to boot into windows

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

If your USB stick contains WIndows 10 1903, then BIOS needs to be set to UEFI. If it is set to Legacy, then it'll just hang with a flashing cursor when you try to boot from it.

If your BIOS does not support UEFI then you'll need to try to find an earlier version of 10. I can't remember if 1903 is the 1st or 2nd version that required UEFI. Try 1703 perhaps. Once it's on there, you can then upgrade to 1903.
