Hi

I just installed the Fall Creator's Update yesterday.

Tried to do an upgrade but it did not succeed.

I have a backup image of the spring update so I did a clean install of the fall update.

I like it much more than the spring update.

Very smooth.

I have done two HP laptop FCU "updates" -- and the results could not be more different!

The first was my old DV6 laptop, which came with Win7, and I upgraded to Win10.  I tried two approaches: (1) using a USB stick made with the MS Media Creation  Tool (MCT), and (2) mounting an ISO file made with the same tool.

In BOTH cases, the PC was trashed.  The OS partition was reformated and left that way -- rendering the PC unusable.  I restored it to working order using an Image Backup I made earlier with Macrium Reflect (more on this below) ...

The second was a new Elitebook 830 revolve -- and that went off without any hitch at all!  I did the update using the Windows 10 Update Assistant tool, it took about 30 minutes, and there were no problems whatsoever.

So, based on these results, it looks like older PCs will have problems but newer ones (i.e., ones coming preinstalled with Win10) will not.

So, if you have an older PC that you Upgraded to Win10, then I would strongly advise following the instructions below to make an image backup of that PC BEFORE attempting the Fall Creator's Update (FCU).

I personally prefer to use third-party Backup solutions as they tend to be both more flexible and more reliable than any built-in solutions.

Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition. This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 15 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore.

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.

> Did anybody here get Windows 10 Creators Update installed automatically (sort of, not via Upgrade Assistant) via Windows Update yet?

Yes.  I had just installed 64-bit Windows 10 (the 2015 version) on an older Lenovo ThinkCentre M58 -- at least 5 years old (3 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 4GB RAM) hardware.

I launched Windows Update, and it upgraded to Version 1607, and then loaded all the updates for 1607.

After a reboot, I launched Windows Update, and it upgraded to Version 1703.

Smooth as a baby's skin.  No problems at all.

Thanks for your responses. They only confirm that I should not rush this process by myself, but rather await Microsoft invitation to do so. I am not in a hurry and happy with what I have.

Also and as a matter of clarification, my initial question was somewhat different: has anybody got such invite via Windows Update to upgrade on relatively new (1 year or around) HP Win10 machine?

I remain just curious that this has not happened on mine just yet and smell a rat. Meanwhile, I decided to remove Spybot Anti-Beacon and see if this changes anything.

Hi

WAWood,

I also use Macrium Reflect free.

Great program.

Krezmein,

Spybot Anti-Beacon may be one of the reasons why Microsoft is not pushing newer versions of Windows 10 to your PC.

My custom PC was updated by the fall W10 Creator's update (Redstone3) yesterday.  It's a very slow update process even on my custom PC. Expect at least four restarts maybe five.  Be patient and don't power off your PC once it starts.

BIOS update observation----- Some HP PCs received BIOS updates in the past to support W10. hmmmm

...as you were chaps, booted up my PC after work today and there we go:

Might be entirely coincidental though...!

Will let you know how it unfolds.

Happy to report that upgrade job has finished 15 mins ago or so wihout any hitches.

Now it's tedious re-indexing & re-caching that progresses in background - it will take a while.

I am also not that happy that my File History has not been retained and Windows most likely will kick off duplicated instance...

So I do wonder if Spybot Anti-Beacon was really the culprit here or not - we will see if I'm progressed onto Fall CU shortly... If that's the case then I will mark this thread as resolved.

Hi Krzemien

You may want to sit back and enjoy Windows 10 (1703) for a while.

I like to push the envelope. The upgrade from 1703 to 1709 failed on my PC but Windows 10 setup got me back to version 1703 without a hitch. Again, I did a clean install of 1709 with zero problems.

You can run a compatibility upgrade check on your PC by following the instructions at this site. You can get the latest version of Windows 10 here.

Scroll down past the Atom processor issues (first link) for instructions on running the Windows 10 installation media in compatibility mode.

There is also a link in this article which provides assistance from Microsoft on how to identify and mitigate Windows 10 upgrade installation error codes.

It is best practice to do the update in a clean environment. Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals.

Hi

To cover a lot of the above posts...

Used Debian, downloaded the English and Int English 64 bit iso's.  I expect proper English English for the UK is inside one of them somewhere.

Expanded my X: as I thought the new iso was a bit larger.

Extracted to X: and a USB because one day I will need at least one of them.

We have a coupla laptops and 3 desktops and an iMac, so 6 potential disasters await.
