My screen went black and a window with black sides appeared finally appeared. After a reboot my screen displayed full with everything streched horizontally. I tried to change the resolution but the only alternative selection available used a 4:3 aspect ratio. Is there a way to force a 16:9 aspect ratio? All drivers show as up-to-date and I cannot find a way to do this in Windows 10.

Thanks for the replies. I had tried already some of these suggestions without success and then called for assistance from a Micorosoft representative who uninstalled the Display Adapter driver and installed an older driver (from a list of drivers on my desktop). The problem was immediately solved without the loss of any of my applacations.
For your information the adapter is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series.
I now hope this helps others who have had this problem

Hi @rlbillions,
Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with the display not working on your HP Touch smart computer. Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
To provide you with an accurate solution, I"ll need a few more details:
Have you checked if this happens in the bios or an external screen?
Did you update the graphics card drivers and the bios?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Perform a Hard reset on the PC:
Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:
If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.
If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.
With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.
With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.
Performing Bios Defaults:
- Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
- Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
- On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
- Press F10 to Save and Exit.
- Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
- Follow the prompts to restart your computer.
If the computer restarts normally, you are done. If the issue persists with the display, proceed to the next step. to uninstall the display drivers from device manager.
Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
Now Restart the computer and then update the Bios, Chipset and graphics card drivers on your PC from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers.
Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.
Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.
For more assistance, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Products - Changing Display Settings, Background Image, Icons, and Screen Saver (Windows 10, 7)
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!

Hi @stacirico,
Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with the display. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
I would suggest here is to follow the steps suggested in the previous post which should help you resolve this issue.
If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to uninstall the display drivers from the device manager and then reinstall the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
If this does not help. the next step would be to perform a Push button reset on the PC: Windows 10 has a push-button reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This can be done either while preserving your personal data and customizations, or removing all your personal data.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Keep me posted,
If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Open the Windows "Device Manager".
Expand the "Display Adapter" branch of the device-tree.
Double-click on the display adapter.
Choose "uninstall", and let it do so.
Shutdown & restart.
Windows should reinstall the device-driver, and should use the "optimal" screen-resolution for your specific monitor.
