I have a HP OMEN Gaming Desktop (running on Windows 11) that I am experiencing a recurring issue. Internet Explorer (MS Edge) keeps opening new tabs automatically without any input from me. Most of the time I haven't even touched anything or haven't been using it and will be in sleep mode. It begins by opening the HP Support page that identifies my computer model, but then continues to open additional tabs, sometimes 50 tabs all displaying the same message and error:

Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "http://support.hp.com/us-en/error/404?" on this server.

I have checked for updates and viruses, run numerous scans and everything is up-to-date and no viruses. I am beyond frustrated with this happening. Is this something that can be fixed? And if so, how?

Please help

Hi @heatherobrien6,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue of MS Edge (or any browser) opening multiple tabs automatically can be caused by various factors including system settings, browser extensions, or malware. Here’s how you can address this issue on your HP OMEN Gaming Desktop.

Check for Malware:

  • Perform a full system scan using Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus software to ensure that no malware or viruses are causing this issue.

Disable Browser Extensions:

  • Open MS Edge and go to the browser settings.
  • Navigate to Extensions and disable all extensions to see if the problem persists.
  • Re-enable them one by one to identify if a specific extension is causing the issue.

Clear Browser Data:

  • Go to Settings in MS Edge, then select Privacy, search, and services.
  • Under Clear browsing data, choose what to clear and make sure to select cached data and cookies.

Reset Edge Settings:

  • In MS Edge, go to Settings > Reset settings and select Restore settings to their default values.
  • This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs but will not delete your bookmarks or saved passwords.

Check Start-Up Programs:

  • Open Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting Task Manager.
  • Go to the Startup tab and check for any unusual programs that may be starting with your system and disable them as necessary.

Turn Off HP Support Assistant Pop-ups:

  • Sometimes HP Support Assistant might be causing these pop-ups. Open HP Support Assistant and check the settings for notifications or automatic actions, and adjust them accordingly.

Update Windows and Edge:

  • Ensure that both your Windows operating system and MS Edge are up-to-date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to check for updates.

Create a New User Profile:

  • Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause unexpected behavior. Create a new user profile in Windows and see if the problem persists when logged into the new account.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue of MS Edge opening tabs automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
