Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I was trying to update to the latest BIOS version for my 843B motherboard.  I kept getting "BIOS Update Failed" error because it was "unable to open the BIOS" file.

I connected with HP support over chat (21-Oct around 11AM EDT).  He had me try some things (Sandeep I think).  He said they didn't advise updating BIOS on a Desktop because it could corrupt Windows 10 (not sure why that would happen).  I told him I was getting occasional temp shutdowns (even though temp never went over 40c).  He advised doing a BIOS recovery and provided me with the steps (rebooting with Windows keu + B key).

The desktop completed the BIOS recovery with no errors that I saw, but when it rebooted I get "BIOS Recovery Error 500".

Now I can't get connected to HP support by chat or phone.  He said he would call back if we got disconnected, but no call in over an hour.  I'm getting pretty frustrated.  The desktop is still under warranty for another 3-4 weeks.

Any suggestions???

After getting that error, now when I reboot it jumps to the "Recovery" screen.  The agent told me that I needed to reinstall Windows 10, that it was corrupted.  I finally reboot to the boot option screen where it lets you pick what drive you want to use as boot drive.  I selected my SDD drive that holds the Windows 10 image, and it booted correctly.  I'm now able to reboot multiple times with no apparent issues.

However, I'm still running the older version of the BIOS that was shipped with the desktop.  I'm baffled that HP won't allow you to update the BIOS.  They keep telling me that I shouldn't update the BIOS because it could corrupt Windows 10.

Is there a fool-proof way to update BIOS or not.  Nobody at HP can tell me.  What's the point of providing updated BIOS if there is no fool-proof way to install it.

Maybe I should stick with Dell in the future.
