@Cajunray,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It looks like you're encountering a boot device issue, meaning your computer isn't able to find the hard drive or the operating system to boot from. The error message you’re seeing typically indicates that your computer can't locate the operating system because either the boot drive isn’t detected or the operating system itself is corrupted or missing.

1. Check the BIOS/UEFI settings

  • Access the BIOS/UEFI: Restart your computer and press the key to enter BIOS/UEFI (usually F2, F10, or ESC—this can vary depending on the model).
  • Check Boot Order: In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot tab. Ensure that your hard drive or SSD is listed as the first boot device. If it's not, change the boot order so that the hard drive is prioritized.
  • Check Drive Detection: In the BIOS, check if your hard drive or SSD is being detected properly. If it's not showing up, there could be a physical connection issue or the drive might have failed.
  • Enable/Disable Secure Boot: In some cases, turning off Secure Boot or Fast Boot might help resolve boot issues.

2. Check Hard Drive Connection

  • Shut down your PC and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the case (if it's a desktop) or remove the back panel (if it's a laptop).
  • Reseat the cables: Check the connections for your hard drive or SSD. Ensure the SATA data and power cables are properly connected to both the drive and the motherboard. For laptops, make sure the SSD or hard drive is properly seated in its slot.
  • If you have access to another computer, you could also try connecting your drive to that system to see if it's still functional.

3. Check for a System Repair

If your drive is detected, but Windows isn’t booting, it may need a repair.

  • Boot from a Windows Installation USB/DVD:
    1. Insert a bootable USB stick or DVD with a Windows installation image. If you don't have one, you'll need another computer to create one using the Windows Media Creation Tool.
    2. Boot from the USB/DVD by selecting it in the boot menu.
    3. Choose your language preferences and click Next.
    4. Select Repair your computer at the bottom.
    5. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

If Startup Repair doesn’t work, try running the Command Prompt option from the Advanced Options.

  • Check disk errors: In the Command Prompt, type the following to check for disk errors: chkdsk C: /f
    • Replace C: with the appropriate drive letter if necessary.
  • Fix Boot Sector: You can also try fixing the boot sector using the following command:
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd

4. Reinstall the Operating System

If the hard drive is detected and the above repairs don’t work, you may need to reinstall the operating system. This will erase your data, so if you want to recover data, it’s best to connect the drive to another working PC first to back it up.

  • Reinstall Windows:
    1. Boot from the Windows installation USB/DVD.
    2. Choose Install Now and follow the on-screen instructions.
    3. When prompted for installation type, choose Custom (advanced) and select your hard drive. Be cautious about the formatting options to avoid wiping important data.

5. Check for Hardware Failure

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, there might be a hardware failure. If your hard drive is not being detected or isn't functional, it might need replacement. You can try using diagnostic tools from your computer HP Support website to test the hard drive for failure.
