HP EliteBook Folio 9480m

Hi to all,

I was tasked with upgrading this computer's SSD to a larger model, but it keeps on giving me problems.

The SSD partitioning is stock, with 4 partitions, the larger / system one being the third one, recovery partition the last (AFAIR)

Firstly, I went in HP Cloud Recovery and created a recovery USB key that only contains Windows 10.

Second, I ran "chkdsk /f" and selected "OK to run on next reboot", as I know lingering errors on disk will cause issues during cloning.

On reboot, instead of the chkdsk running,  an unexpected error pops up immediately:

"Your PC/Devic needs to be repaired

The Boot Configuration Data is missing some required information

File: \Boot\BCD

Error code: 0xc0000034

You¡ll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media […]"

Already tried:

I tried pressing all F-keys, Delete and Esc, to no avail. It doesn't seem to be able to find the recovery partition. The USB customized Windows Installer made with HP Cloud Recovery appears to be just that, an installer that will erase the destination disk, with no reset or recovery options.

The Microsoft-issued Windows 10 bootable media does have this option, but since previous install isn't detected, doesn't work either.

The following sequence to recover boot sector didn't work either.

  • Bootrec /fixmbr: no error
  • Bootrec /fixboot: access denied
  • Bootrec /scanos: Windows install properly detected
  • Bootrec /rebuildbcd: no error

Still no boot.

Linux-based Boot Repair Disk did find the installation, but couldn't make it bootable either.

Help needed 😞
