I have a 3 years old HP pavilion all in one and my built in webcam was working perfectly until 23 April when a windows 10 update was installed.  After years of experience of windows updates affecting the operation of PC peripherals I do not think that was a coincidence. I have gone through EVERY procedure recommended by HP support and windows support.  No joy.

Unfortunately one of the last suggestions was to uninstall the webcam in Device Manager, then use Driver Updates to re install it.  That did not re install the webcam , it just changed the status from 'not connected' to 'uninstalled'. System restore did not work either because it did not offer a restore date prior to 23 April.

Burjass. Apologies for replying in English, I can read Spanish but do not speak it. This fault seems to be common, and I have not seen an answer to it.  It cannot possibly be true that so many users' webcams developed a fault simultaneously.

Click Start and type Device manager.  If you can see CAMERA: Microsoft HD 1MP webcam, you can try updating the driver.

HOWEVER most probably you cannot see a CAMERA in the list of devices. Click View at the top and show hidden devices.

Now your CAMERA may appear but in grey.  OR your CAMERA may still be absent.  In which case you are in the same position as me . I cannot find a solution and I have tried all the suggestions from HP and Microsoft.

If you are lucky in Start type Restore. You might find a restore point before 23/04/2020 - if you can then restoring to that time  might return your camera to its function.

If it is an EliteOne All-In-One desktop, you have to push down on the camera module at the top of the screen & it will then pop up when you release it. Then to put it away after use, you push it down again and it locks back in place (retracted).

No, this problem was on a Pavilion model with the camera inside the frame at the top, not a pop up.

However I have found a solution, which worked on my machine at least.  It was suggested by a colleague with a Lenovo machine who found this solution for that make.  Instead of switching the PC off using the 'shut down' option select 'sleep' instead.  Leave the PC untouched for at least 10 minutes. Click the enter key and reboot the machine, which requires the password entry.  Shut down fully using the 'shut down' option.  When next starting the machine the camera worked - for me.

Something I noticed, after installing another camera app Yewcam.  The Windows camera app shows a mirror image, the Yewcam app image is the right way round.   If you need to show a person watching you something in writing, using the Windows app will show the text reversed, but the Yewcam image will be legible.

Apologies for jumping in.

This answer is directed specifically to the original poster:

According to the Specs, this computer model does not include the type of webcam required for facial recognition.

Specifications

Webcam
HP Truevision FHD camera with dual array digital microphone

HP PCs - Troubleshooting Windows Hello Face Recognition

"This document is for HP computers with an infrared (IR) camera and Windows 10."

Windows Face logon requires the high-grade IR camera

Another quick way to check whether the computer thinks it can do this:

Settings Accounts Sign-in Options

If Windows Hello is not available, you will see a message:

Further to my solution posted 8th May.  It is not permanent, the camera may disappear again when in a subsequent session.

If so click start and type 'video' which opens a video manager app.  Select the 'camera'  within this app.  Note this appears to be the same camera app that you could select directly, but it does not produce the 'no camera attached' fault response.  it should open the camera.  So long as you have not logged out, the camera should be available for a Zoom or Skype session.

This is a work-around rather than a cure, so If anyone has a cure that makes the camera app work when selected, please let us know.

I have the same issue on my HP Envy Curved All-in-One PC 34-b0xx

All of a sudden (assume after an update of sorts) the camera would not work for Windows Hello access to the machine.  First world issue I know, but very frustrating.  Additionally, I can no longer use the machine for conferencing using MS Teams, Zoom etc as the camera just will not work.

That is not entirely true, if I'm honest.  If I open the camera app from within Win10, the camera will work for a split second, then freeze, then restart, then work for a split second, then freeze, etc.  You get the picture.

Spoke to HP Support at length as it appears to be a driver issue.  They advised to update the driver to the sp78998 version.  Had already done that, doesn't work.

Then told to update the BIOS to sp100578.  Had already done that, doesn't work.

Final suggestion was to rebuild the machine!!  Not prepared to do that as I cannot afford to have the machine out of action, and there is no guarantee that the issue will not reappear once all updates are reapplied.  Very disappointed in the lack of concern from HP Support, especially as it seems to be quite a common problem.

Have trawled the web to find a solution, but none have worked so far.  Would be very interested if anyone has made any progress.

@colnhurst Seems like you've done everything apart from a OS re-installation and that's the only option left to do, that can actually resolve the issue: I suggest you click here for the steps and if you aren't comfortable doing the same, or in the off chance that you've already done that while you were waiting for a response and it didn't work either, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,
