CD/DVD device worked perfectly but now is not recognizedd and doesn't function. Device Manager says driver is installed but corrupted. How to fix or get replacement driver? Device is: hp CDDVDW SH216BB SCSI. HP website says no such driver is available for download from them.

Paul, FIXED!! After doing Resulution Step #3, I then performed Resolution Step #2 (Troubleshooting & Configure a Device) and it worked. Thanks to all of you who made suggestions.

Hi:

See if performing the applicable resolution step (#3) from the link below resolves the problem...

In Device Manager, right-mouse-click on the CD/DVD drive, and choose "uninstall".

Then, shutdown and reboot.  Windows will reinstall the software -- hopefully not "corrupted".

Since Windows XP (and maybe earlier), Windows has all the support that one needs for reading CDs.

So, there is no need for any downloads from any web-site.

Thank you, but device mfgr (HP) support website says no such driver is available.

I did that as you suggested and the device reappeared in the Device Manager listing but still did not work. I ran Troubleshooter, and it was unable to fix the problem. Thanks, though. Any other thoughts?

Find a "bootable" CD/DVD disk.

Insert it into the device.

Shutdown your computer.

Start-up your computer, and look for the text "press <blah> to boot from CD", or "press <blah> to temporarily change boot-order".

Press that key, and try to boot from the disk.

If it fails, then the problem is "hardware" related -- implying that nothing you can change in "software" will make any difference.

Read that "step 3" from the other person's suggestion, if your computer does successfully boot.

Or, if you know the date/time at which the device did work, consider using Windows "System Restore" to time-warp your copy of Windows back to that date.

Paul_Tikkanen, I did step #3, but it didn't fix the problem. BTW, somewhere along the way as I tried various other things, I got "Code 39," if that's helpfujl. Thanks.
