My camera is not working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've gone into settings > privacy to make sure permissions are on.
When I open the camera app, it gives me the notification:
"Your camera might be covered
To use your camera, you might need to slide a shutter near the camera, press a camera button on the keyboard, or slide a camera switch on your device"
I don't think that I have any of those.
Help!

Hi @BeezStarz,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I Understand that your concern, don’t worry I will help you with this .
To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?
- What HP laptop model and year are you using?
- Does the camera show up in Device Manager under “Imaging devices” or “Cameras”?
- Are you running Windows 10 or Windows 11?
- Does the camera work in other apps (like Zoom, Teams, or Skype), or is it only the Camera app that shows this message?
Troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Check Device Manager for disabled devices
- Press Windows + X → Device Manager
- Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices)
- If your camera appears, right-click → Enable device
- If it’s missing, click View → Show hidden devices
2. Check for physical switches or function keys
Some notebook have a privacy switch, or a function key combo like Fn + F8 that disables the camera. Even if you don’t see a shutter or slider, try pressing your Fn keys and look for a camera icon to toggle it.
3. Run the Windows Troubleshooter
- Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters
- Run the Camera troubleshooter
4. Check BIOS/UEFI settings
- Restart your laptop → press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS
- Look for Built-in Camera or Integrated Camera → make sure it’s enabled
- Save and exit
5. Update drivers
Even after reinstalling, try installing the latest driver from HP Support for your exact laptop model rather than relying on Windows’ automatic driver.
I hope this helps.
