Hi, I have a brand new Elitedesk 800 G3 Mini 35w that I've been trying to setup but have been having a lot of trouble installing Windows updates. Although it's a couple of years old, I purchased this before the pandemic for my office but never set it up. It wasn't even taken out of the box. I tried setting it up last week and the first issue I ran into is that it wouldn't find my wifi network. Once I got into the OS and did some searching I found that I needed to update the driver for the networking card since the old one couldn't recognize networks by newer routers (I'm using an Orbi). Once I updated I connected to the network no problem.
I started to run Windows updates but I continue to get stuck on certain updates. The two that have persistently been stuck are an update to .NET Framework 48 (KB4486129) and an update for Windows 10 Version 1703 (KB4033631). These will not install no matter how many times I've tried to restart. The feature update of 2H22 has also repeatedly failed. Steps I've taken to try and resolve:
- Updated graphics card drivers and BIOS from HP's support site
- Followed HP's suggested steps to upgrade the OS on their support site
- Paused and re-started updates so it would re-run the search and not be stuck on the two I mentioned above
- Run a script I found on a Microsoft support forum to clean out and repair Windows update
- Downloaded and run Windows Update Assistant to try and force the upgrade. This has failed multiple times. I have not been able to create installation media because I don't have a big enough USB stick
Because this is a brand new setup there is nothing on it that I'm concerned with losing, so I can try and reinstall from scratch. My only issue with that is the possibility the networking adapter gets downgraded again and I can't find the network when setting up the computer. Any help here is appreciated, thanks so much!

Hi:
This is what I would recommend:
Clean install W10 22H2 and go on from there.
Make a bootable USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below.
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
Boot from the installation media and after you install W10, let it do the updates and then if any other drivers/software are needed you can install those from the support page.
HP EliteDesk 800 35W G3 Desktop Mini PC Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
I have the same model PC and it works fine using the approach I gave you.
I also installed W11 on it afterward, though it is not officially supported by Microsoft or HP.

OK, thanks for the reply! I'll have to get myself a big enough USB drive and give it a shot. I figured that would be the next best thing to try. I will reply back or mark your post as the answer once I have a chance to do this if it works. Thanks!

Hi Paul, I've had the worst time trying to boot to the USB drive I created but after multiple failed attempts I was finally able to do it. Quick question, when it asks which type of installation I want, should I choose Upgrade, or "Custom: Install Windows Only"? Again, I have nothing on the computer I need to keep, but I want to make sure I'm making the right choice here. Thanks!

Hi:
When booting from the W10 installation media for a clean install, you have to choose Custom.
You can only select the upgrade option if Windows is already installed, and you are upgrading from an older build of W10 to a newer one.

Ok, I started the process and it seems to be moving forward, however it's been stuck on the "Network" part of the installation for at least an hour. After I connected it to my wifi it started to work and spin and is just continuing to spin. I'm going to just let it go and I'll let you know what happens!

Just wanted to let you know that everything worked, and the computer has finally been updated! I really appreciate your help on this.
Question about Windows 11, did you have to install it the same way, or did you let the system update itself? Do you find that 11 is working well on this computer?

You're very welcome.
That is great news.
Your PC does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements, so you have to use a hack to get it to install.
If you want to install W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2.
You have to use the version of the Rufus utility that I zipped up and attached in the discussion (v3.18).

If the in-place upgrade fails, you should be able to clean install W11 using the bootable W11 installation flash drive you made with Rufus.
