Tried all the various keyboard options, but cannot get past the opening screen to log in with a pin number?? Found that keeping power button pressed for 12 seconds shut down laptop . Re-started, screen displayed 'configuring' message. Possibly an update from MS which are always interfering with the system operations!!

Greetings @superchip
I don't know. This would be a tough one to figure out.
I only use a local Windows account sign-in. I do use a PIN. I don't use BitLocker.
I've also had occasional Windows PIN sign-in problems. But I was able to select "Other sign-in Options" at the sign-in screen.
I then used the original local account password I set up when doing the Windows OOBE.
You could have a Microsoft Account sign-in problem if you are using a Microsoft Account.
A Windows HP firmware update could cause a sign-in problem when using a PIN.
You might have an insurmountable data recovery/Windows sign-in problem if you are also using BitLocker and you can't sign-in to Windows using a PIN or a password. You would then lose access to all data on the system drive and you might have to reinstall Windows.
There may be a way to fix this problem in the WinRE. But you might still need a PIN or a password.
