Pavilion P2-1105
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I'm trying to update the BIOS on this system.  The update software runs through the wizard, flashes a black terminal window for a second, then quits.  Going by the version indicated in the BIOS, it does *not* update.

What gives?

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

Where are you getting a HP BIOS update from? Your PC is circa 2012. HP usually provides BIOS updates for two or three years after the production date.

I see no HP BIOS updates when using Windows 7 at this (Link). There are no Windows 8.x BIOS updates. No BIOS updates period.

OK, what??  I swear, I just downloaded it from that exact page a few hours ago, and now it's gone.

And why on earth would they not continue to provide the archived BIOS updates?

Hi,

I believe you.

HP must have pulled the BIOS update.

Your experience with this BIOS update suggests it may be corrupt.

Well, that's frustrating.

The issue I'm trying to troubleshoot is that system won't cut power after shutdown.  This has happened with both Windows and a USB bootable Linux, so I'm reasonably certain it's an issue with hardware or firmware.

Hi,

Is the PC restarting after you do a shutdown?

Again. HP does not support seven year old PCs with BIOS updates to fix BIOS issues.

I would think you may have a hardware problem. The PC worked fine until???

Motherboard, power supply, or the power switch may cause this problem? One can only guess.

Yes, I understand that HP doesn't support older system, but it's unreasonable not to publish BIOS updates that they have previously made available.

In any case, I don't know how long this has been an issue (I'm an independent IT provider, not my PC)

This happens when I shutdown, not when I restart.  The power light just stays on and the fans continue to run.  It does appear that Windows has unloaded properly because there's no autochk when it boots back up.

I have minimal hardware connected, just a keyboard and mouse.  I've disconnected the optical drive.  Still fails to cut power.

Hi,

You will have to troubleshoot components.

I doubt you will see any future HP BIOS updates for this product.

Yes, obviously, they won't be developing any BIOS updates, but why can't they keep the old updates available?

Hi,

I don't know. I don't work for HP.

I build and repair PCs. Primarily use Asus and Gigabyte motherboards. Both vendors stop BIOS updates at about the two year mark. Both vendors offer three year warranties. HP now offers a one year warranty and a add on two year CarePack warranty.
