HP BIOS driver #33 continues to install and I have removed it--the driver is defective. It also does not match the recommeneded drivers on HP.com.

How do I prevent this driver from reinstalling automatically from windows?

Hi @jjevnikar

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing this—it’s understandably frustrating when a driver you’ve removed keeps coming back, especially when it doesn’t match the version you trust. You’ve already taken the right steps by identifying the mismatch, and now we’ll make sure Windows respects your choice.

To prevent Windows from reinstalling the HP BIOS driver automatically, you can disable automatic driver updates through Device Installation Settings. This gives you control over which drivers are installed and avoids unwanted reinstalls.

Steps to Stop Windows from Reinstalling the HP BIOS Driver

1. Disable Automatic Driver Installation This prevents Windows from automatically downloading and installing drivers during updates.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System > About.
  3. Scroll down and click Advanced system settings.
  4. In the System Properties window, go to the Hardware tab.
  5. Click Device Installation Settings.
  6. Select “No (your device might not work as expected)” and click Save Changes.

This stops Windows Update from pushing drivers automatically, including BIOS-related ones.

2. Use Group Policy Editor (Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise) If you're using a Pro edition, you can block driver updates more precisely.

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update
  3. Double-click Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  4. Set it to Enabled, then click Apply and OK.

3. Use HP’s Official Driver Package To ensure your system uses only the correct BIOS version, download the verified driver manually:

Enter your laptop’s model number and download only the BIOS version listed there. Avoid installing drivers through Windows Update or third-party tools.

4. Optional: Use Microsoft’s Show or Hide Updates Tool This tool lets you block specific updates from reinstalling.

Run the tool, select the BIOS driver from the list, and choose to hide it.

You’ve already done the hard part by identifying the issue—now with these steps, you’ll have full control over what gets installed. Let me know if you’d like help locating the correct BIOS version for your model or verifying the driver package.
