Hey, I'm a noobie to PCs and recently ive decided to upgrade to 16gb ram and a M.2 SSD but since my computer does not have any M.2 SSD im wondering if I have to buy the screw to slot into the SSD or is there already one installed? Thanks!

Hi:

Generally, if the PC did not come with a M.2 SSD, there will be no M.2 SSD hold-down screw.

Visit your local PC repair shop and see if they can provide you with one.

Otherwise, they sell M.2 SSD screw kits on Amazon.

Which screw kit supports my motherboard?

Unfortunately, I would have no idea.

Generally, the M.2 screws to secure SSD's are a standard size, so one kit should be as good as any other.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it, just a question do you think a M2 x 3mm would work?

Also I found a video of HP opening the computer and it said the screw was a P1 3mm screw. so would a M2 x 3mm work? thank you so much

You're very welcome.

Yes, normally the standard SSD hold down screw size is 2 mm in diameter x 3 mm long.

But you have to make sure the screw has a 'pan head' so the head is wide enough to hold down the SSD.

That is why I suggested going to a PC repair shop or buying one of those kits.

I've never heard of a 1 mm thick screw used to hold down a SSD.

Wait till you see how thin a 2 mm screw is.
