When the desktop went from Win8.1 to Win10 the HP DVD-ROM drive stopped working. The device is working properly according to the equipment check and this has been a common error with Win10 from what I see on the Net. I have contacted LG as they sell DVD-ROM drives that are supposed to operate under Win10 but the drive is vertically mounted so it must have extensions to hold the disc. Yes, optical disk technology is now obsolete but I am going to replace it anyway if there are no driver updates to handle this problem, just as I will replace the 1 TB HDD with a new 2 TB HDD much as I have cloned and replaced drives in another desktop and in a laptop.

Windows 10 or 11 should have no problem recognizing a optical drive. Playing it is a different problem.
Do you see it show up as D or E in the file explorer ?
What you have lost is media function keys and any third party media player such as Cyberlink (power dvd) that came with the PC.
You should be able to upgrade a Cyberlink windows 8 app to run in 10 but it is likely the media keys on the keyboard will not work.

I'm not sure I have the same problem but my DVD/CD unit has stopped working. I can see it with file explorer. If I open it shows only a couple of files that are ready to be written to the DVD. There is a DVD in it but, it will not open. Eject results in an immediate, "An error occurred while ejecting 'DVD RW Drive (E:)'. Pressing the button on the device does not open it. Properties shows the drive but with 0 Used space and 0 Free space. Format will run all the way until the timer bar is complete but will never end or sometimes simply says it could not complete the format. The Windows Diagnostics the will run under Windows does not offer a Optical Drive test. The offline diagnostics says to insert an already written DVD but, as I said, the drive will not open. Windows is up-to-date.
