My PC was switched on and I then came in to see a blue screen advising that there was a SMART Hard Disk Error. I ran the system diagnostics on all drives and it said that the SMART Check passed but that the Long DST  is not available. The next screen then said:

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure.

Failing Drive: SATA2

Failing Attriibute: # 05.

I'm not sure what any of this means and I can't seem to move beyond any of these screens. I would appreciate any advice on steps I can take to see if I can back up data etc.

Thanks. I followed those steps - when I got to the hard drive test it came us with a Hard Drive 1 failure (ATA 2000 GB). Is that my external hard drive? I unplugged it and tired booting the computer again but I still go to the same hard drive failure screen and can't access Windows.
