OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC GT22-1000i (6C1R9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently discovered that my computer (OMEN 45 L) was affected by the Intel 13-14th generation processor instability issues, and attempted to download the BIOS update that counteracts those issues through the "software and drivers" tab in HP Support Assist. The update tooltip reads as follows:

HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 8A96)
This package provides an update to the HP consumer Desktop PC BIOS (ROM Family 8A96) for supported models running a supported operating system
SoftPaq number: sp155109
Version: F.30
Size: 15.05 MB

Unfortunately, all my attempts to download and install this have failed. I select "download and install," progress through the two pop-up windows that appear, and then select the "restart and apply now" option. My computer restarts just fine, but my BIOS do not update from F.20 to F.30, and the update displays as "failed" in the history tab of HP Support Assistant. I have attempted to troubleshoot this first by selecting a different folder to download the files to than the default, and then by uninstalling my Mcafee antivirus software (some Reddit threads indicated it caused problems for them in similar situations), but neither worked.

Anybody know of a fix to get this working, or failing that alternative methods of downloading + installing this BIOS update?

Hi @StupidWebsite1,

Thanks so much for the detailed update and for being so patient throughout this process

You've done a great job troubleshooting so far, and based on what you've shared, it seems the BIOS update is failing to apply properly through both HP Support Assistant and direct execution. Since your system matches the ROM Family SSID (8A96), but the model number slightly varies (G22-1xxx vs G22-1000i), it's likely just a naming convention and shouldn't cause an issue as long as the motherboard and ROM family match.

Given that the standard update methods have not worked, the best next step is to try updating the BIOS using the BIOS Recovery Flash Drive method, which often bypasses the issues that can occur in Windows-based installers.

Here's what you can do:

Create a BIOS Recovery Flash Drive:

Download the BIOS update file again from HP's website.

Run the .exe file, and when prompted, choose the option to create a BIOS recovery USB.

Plug in an empty USB flash drive (at least 1 GB, formatted to FAT32).

Follow the instructions to write the BIOS recovery image to the USB.

 Apply the BIOS Update:

With the PC turned off, insert the USB flash drive.

Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for about 2–3 seconds.

Release all keys and the power button.

You should see the BIOS recovery screen and the update should begin automatically.

This method typically works when the in-OS BIOS update fails and is a safe fallback.

Looking forward to your update, and thank you again for your patience! 🌟

@StupidWebsite1, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Support Assistant BIOS update!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Intel has announced an instability issue on select Intel Core 13th and 14th Generation i5, i7, and i9 Processors that can result in unstable applications, blue screen errors, or issues where the computer may stop responding. The processors affected include:

  • i5-13600K, i5-13600KF
  • i7-13700, i7-13700F, i7-13700K, i7-13700KF
  • i9-13900, i9-13900K, i9-13900KF
  • i5-14600K
  • i7-14700, i7-14700F, i7-14700K, i7-14700KF
  • i9-14900, i9-14900K, i9-14900KF

To address the instability issues, Intel has released a series of microcode patches incorporated into the BIOS Firmware. HP has received microcode version 0x129 and 0x12B, which have been made available in the BIOS updates. For your OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC GT22-1000i, you will need to update your BIOS version to the latest available on HP.com.

Thanks for the response!

I followed the steps in the document and went to the software and drivers page for my model , but unfortunately HP doesn't offer a BIOS update for my version of windows 11 (they offer up to Windows 22H2, I'm on Windows 24H2). The "my operating system is not supported" page says to avoid downloading BIOS updates from third-parties such as the manufacturer, so I'm kind of in a catch-22 situation here.

Should I just download and install the 22H2 BIOS update?

@StupidWebsite1, hello!

Thanks for getting back with that update! I understand how frustrating this situation can be, especially when you're stuck between needing the update and HP not listing one for your current Windows version (24H2).

In cases like this, BIOS updates are generally independent of the OS version as long as the update is meant for your specific system model and motherboard (SSID 8A96). Since HP officially lists the BIOS update for Windows 22H2, you should be fine installing it—even on 24H2—as long as your exact system model matches the listed compatibility. However, to be absolutely safe, I’d recommend these steps before proceeding:

Double-check compatibility

Go to the HP Software & Drivers page and confirm that the BIOS update (F.30) explicitly supports your OMEN 45L model.

If you see your model listed, it should work despite the OS mismatch.

Manually Install the BIOS Update

If HP Support Assistant isn't working, try downloading and installing the update manually:

Download the BIOS update (.exe) from HP’s official site.

Run the file as an administrator.

Follow the on-screen prompts to install.

Restart your system and check if the update applies.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

@Zoey7886,

Thank you for your continued support. I downloaded the Windows 22H2 F.30 BIOS for the OMEN 45L Gaming PC GT22-1000i (it does say it's for the "ROM Family SSID 8A96," which matches the Base/Motherboard listed in my system settings), ran the file as administrator, and restarted the computer according to the prompts. Unfortunately, once again the computer restarted just fine, but the BIOS didn't change. I checked HP Support Assist to make sure I didn't accidentally run it through that - this attempt did not appear in the update history section of that program, so I don't think that explains the failure.

I also tried downloading and installing the F.21 BIOS, as I have heard that sometimes there can be issues with "jumping" several BIOS versions ahead and this was the closest version beyond mine offered. This did not help and I got the same results - the update program runs fine, I use the prompt to restart the computer, and when it turns on again the BIOS is still on F.20.

I did notice while checking my system information that my computer model is listed as "Omen by HP 45L Gaming Desktop G22-1xxx," not "Omen by HP 45L Gaming Desktop G22-1000i." I didn't see a 1xxx option listed when searching for a model - is that important, or just weird notation?

I'm not a tech expert and I'll defer to your judgement, but I suspect something is going wrong with whatever program HP is using to try and update the BIOS. Beyond just hitting "update," there's an option for copying the BIOS image and for creating a recovery flash drive. Is there a way to use either of those options to update the BIOS, instead of trying to do the simple update that has now failed across three BIOS update files run in and out of Support Assist?

In any case, thank you for your patience and let me know if there's any additional information I can provide that might help solve this issue.
