 I just updated my HP Support Assistant  to (sp108770) which is in a folder called \swsetup.

 Also in that same folder are EIGHT other directories (older versions?) that are named "sp96454" through to "sp100895".

 Are these in fact older version and can safely be deleted, leaving only the latest "sp108770"?

in this folder you should have all that is original or updated ..
It may be necessary in order to be able to reinstall them with the recovery manager program.
But if not, double check what it is, and you can effectively delete the old versions.
It should no longer be possible to reinstall what was removed here with the program:
