Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We are getting the error “We couldn’t update system reserved partition” due to the fact that there is not enough space available on the partition when we try to upgrade Windows 10 from 1903 --> 2004.  So we need to make room.

 

Even after following the Microsoft KB article there is still no enough room and it still fails  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3086249/we-couldn-t-update-system-reserved-partition-error-... 

 

Which leaves us with the HP folder in the EFI folder.  Is anything in the folder required?  It seems like it is just for BIOS updates.  Not sure what the SystemDiags or DEVFW folder is for.  We deleted this whole directory and the computer boots fine and Windows Upgrades but we want to verify this will not cause long term issues.  We are making a script to fix this across hundreds of computers or else Windows will not upgrade so resizing the partition is not an option.

I ran into a similar problem a while back -- and what MS wanted to do was increase the size of System Reserved, quite a lot -- and it could not do that (even though, their tech notes said that WIndows would do that automatically if needed).

 

So, I had to go into the drive, shrink down the OS partition and move it to the right, to free up enough space for MS to resize the System Reserved partition.  If that does work for you, you're now going to be faced with doing that for lots of PCs and I have no idea how you could script that.

 

If that does not work for you, then sorry, I don't know what to suggest -- you would need to contact Microsoft Support to see what they recommend.

Right.... we have already established what the cause of the problem is and a solution which is scriptable.

So we are back to the original question... is it safe (long term) to delete HP folder inside the EFI folder?
