Yes, that is the caboose in our town.

February History Portal: Downtown Caboose – The O'Fallon Public Library News (ofplblog.info)

Paris has the Eiffel Tower and we have the caboose.  😊

🙂

I like the word "caboose". It sounds French and is translated in Canadian French by Cambuse. Cambuse is a French word...in French slang it is a neglected flat (I love it). First meaning I ignored is a shop on a boat (Marine).

"BOOSE" in French is cow **bleep**... that's why your caboose sounds funny (for me).

Anything else to see there ? 🙂

I do too and you're right.

It does sound French or maybe even Native American.

In English the word was originally used as a kitchen on the deck of a ship and in real life, the train crews used to sleep and cook in the caboose.  Maybe it was named for that.

Otherwise, the term caboose is a crewed railroad car attached at the end of a freight train.

Trains no longer use cabooses anymore.  They were phased out in the early 1980's.

Some folks have bought them and used them to live in, or for bed and breakfast inns.

Caboose is also an American slang term for something that would be inappropriate to post here but you can look it up. 😊

Our town is known for President Ronald Reagan who as a boy/teenager every Summer used to visit his aunt that lived here.  She owned a store that is still in existence, but it is a tavern now.

The only other thing I can think of is O'Fallon is the birthplace of the famous American movie star William Holden.

I have driven past the house he lived in many times.  It's on Cherry Street.

Thank you...for Reagan ! I didn't know the story of course. In case I go there, we will meet at the tavern ! 🙂

Did Tom Sawyer or another famous folk  live in a Caboose ?? I wonder.

I only visited New York, Washington,  and the West National Parks in the USA...for the moment !

Anytime.

Mark Twain never wrote that Tom Sawyer lived in a caboose.

I am a transplant to this town.  I've lived here for 28 years, and also lived here from 1989-1992.

Of all things, the United States Coast Guard sent me to St. Louis twice.

No coasts here, only the Mississippi River.

I am originally from the NYC metropolitan area (New Milford, New Jersey), so I am very familiar with New York City.

My first job out of college was in an office on 41st street and Broadway.

I've been to the Grand Canyon.  Someday maybe I will get to Yellowstone.

Coast Guards ? You are one of them ??

I didn't enjoy so much the Grand Canyon. Too wide ? Or cloudy ?? I prefered Death Valley but I enjoyed the whole trip. Nothing better than crossing the country with z car and stop here and there, by chance...

Yes, I enjoyed my 20 year career in the USCG.
