The hard drive failed completely. I have no backups of any kind. I need to recover the OS and re register windows. I don't have my product key available. I only have my tower. How can I fully recover my computer after replacing the hard drive?

@Kurt25 -- also many "designed for Windows 10" brand-name computers have the Microsoft product-key embedded in the motherboard. So, the Windows Installer can extract this key, and will use it, without any active Internet connection.

Hello
This is a macro, recorded answer, read the following carefully, and see according to your own problem.
If you have any doubts, ask me, I will try to answer the best
you have an error message, or a problem with the hard drive (or SSD)
this indicates that your hard drive is certainly damaged
Depending on the error, and its condition, it may fail anytime.
maybe it doesn't work anymore
First of all, you can try to recover personal data
Once your data has been saved
You can either follow the following or buy a new hard drive directly!
What I am indicating now is just a rescue option
If it works, it will be temporary, back up your data regularly
depending on the hard drive condition, it may work a good time
but the hard drive may fail permanently
it is mainly in order to be able to use the computer, the time to replace the system disk
be careful because the goal is to erase the hard drive, your unsaved data will be lost
so you have to reinstall the computer completely
There are several methods, depending on the installed windows system and your computer
Try a full reinstall
You can try to help yourself with this tutorial (sorry not fully translated)
que faire en cas d' erreur / échec dst du disque dur - HP Support Community - 7338574
Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)
if you have windows 10 you can use microsoft tool
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10
If you originally had a sata HDD you could possibly install a sata SDD
but this is another topic, if needed you should open another thread
Your computer should be this :
You can try several things in order to try to recover your data,
You can try a bootable cd / dvd type live cd (linux)
https://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-retrieve-windows-files-using-a-linux-live-cd/
you can try removing the hard drive, in order to connect it to another computer internally, or with a usb adapter!

If your disk is not completely out of order, this gives you a small chance

I hope it is imbedded in the computer as someone stated. The last time I recovered an HP computer there were recovery discs. This was a long time ago! It would be excellent if it would activate windows when a new HD is installed. I guess I will have to try and find out. I can't accept a solution until I know it works. I'll update this thread when the problem is solved.

@Kurt25 -- It would be excellent if it would activate windows when a new HD is installed. I guess I will have to try and find out. I can't accept a solution until I know it works.
Yes, to repeat, for brand-name (HP, Dell, Lenovo) computers that are "designed for Windows 8" (or for Windows 10), the product-key is embedded in the motherboard.
Further, if you "activated" Windows 8 (or Windows 10), that process sent your product-key to Microsoft.
Reinstalling Windows onto an "almost-the-same" computer (different disk-drive) will cause the Windows Installer to "call home" to retrieve the product-key, and the Installer will use the product-key to activate.
Microsoft indicate that if you make "too many" changes to an activated computer (RAM, network adapter, motherboard, disk-drive, CPU, CD/DVD) then you no longer have the "same" computer, and activation will not be successful.

Strange - The URL contains a link to Harley Davidson financial services,. You should consider getting a BMW.
A restore to windows 7 can be a problem as discussed here Microsoft has removed apps needed to run the still free upgrade to windows 10. You will have to find apps such as visual c runtimes, service pack 2, newer Internet explorer and others just to be able to tun the upgrade. Best is to use a ISO of windows 10 as described earlier by the other volunteers.

what is described in the link is not applicable @BeemerBiker here
You either have the option of creating a windows 10 recovery kit originally, if this has not been done, hard drive out of order, no longer possible
Either the possibility of using cloud recovery, if the computer is compatible
or use the microsoft media!
optionally, pay for a factory recovery kit, from hp, or a third party
the user should not be able to use a windows 7 recovery kit
Obtaining PC recovery USB drives or discs
Software Recovery Options (Windows 10)
that' s all
