HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

This HP printer driver (presumed to be Hewlett-Packard - USB - 4/8/2019 12:00:00 AM - 1.0.0.237) ... repeatedly attempts to install/reinstall itself, and Windows is never able to resolve its legitimacy. Mostly, it stays pending in the Windows Update facility and never clears. And please don't give me a bunch of crap about how I should be editing the Windows Registry, or executing obscure interfaces to plunge deep into the Windows internals to somehow "disable" the update for this defect! Please ... just don't.

Windows 10, Windows 11.

This interaction between the HP USB interface and Windows has been a problem for several years now. I have never seen this error with other manufacturer's drivers ... it certainly seems that this error is an HP USB interface problem. Perhaps a noncompliance to the rules for Windows Update support. HP needs to fix this obnoxious behavior.

The software in question belongs to HP.

For the record, I'm running an entirely standard copy of Windows 11 Pro. There is literally NOTHING custom about it. I'm certain, based on a simple internet search for the key "Hewlett-Packard - USB - 4/8/2019 12:00:00 AM - 1.0.0.237" that there are thousands and thousands of HP printer users experiencing this annoying defect.

HP technical services ... PLEASE FIX!

I had the same problem with a firmware update to my HP CM1415fnw.  It was very aggravating as every windows 10 system I had kept trying to update firmware that was already updated.   It finally took a driver update from HP to stop the update attempts.

There are a number of 2022 releases for your printer including firmware.

I would put in the full solution and also updates the HP smart or whatever HP app you are using.

run off a printer report to verify the correct firmware.

Except for the HP support assistant, the printer control apps can be obtained from the Microsoft Store

Thank you for the info. I did update the firmware for the printer M477fdw.

I also manually installed the updated device driver (the 4/8/2019 version that Windows can't install, won't install). I discovered that the 4/8/2019 print driver from HP causes the printer to signal off-line. The 4/8/2019 print driver doesn't work, so I rolled it back to the 2006 Microsoft version.

There's nothing to do here except to get HP technical services to track this down and fix it. It's broken, and the software belongs to HP.

Anyway, thanks for the firmware update tip.

Second, I don't install the "complete HP solution" software because its giant, bloated, buggy, and interferes with Windows. It's an application layer software package that brings nothing to the table for the light duty user such as myself. I can print, scan, copy without it using the standard Windows interfaces.

HP technical services, please fix your 4/8/2019 USB driver! Either pull it off the Windows update queue, or fix it so that it properly operates the printing machine!
