HP EliteDesk 705 35W G4 Base Model Desktop Mini PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I tried the method I rememeber:

format ntfs

copy the iso files on the stick

doesn't boot

tried the same with fat 32, also does not boot

tried rufus also does not boot

Any ideas on how to get Win7 on the thing?

I used Rufus to create a bootable W7 installation flash drive.

I set it up exactly as shown in the illustration for Windows installations.

You have to make sure that you disable secure boot though, because W7 is not compatible with secure boot.

Then you boot the USB flash drive from the UEFI USB device not the legacy one.

If your PC is one of those with a Ryzen processor, there will be no graphics driver for W7.

What settings did you use in Rufus? Which guide are you refering too?

For example Filesystem.

Drivers:

I checked the support page and donwloaded all the Win7 64Bit drivers there. Does that not include the graphics driver?

Yes, it is a Ryzen CPU 2200G.

Pretty sure secure boot should be disabled as I already installed Debian 12. Where I found out the mess with amdgpu drivers with Ryzen iGPU 1/2nd season. But a bit later I also found out that this really is just the propriatary driver, the open source driver seems to work fine. So for now I just blacklisted "amdgpu". And after a reboot everything looked fine so far.

But just to be sure:

Where do I find the secure boot settings?

According to my research ESC during boot should get me into the bios. but the options there seem very limited. I could not find boot order or secure boot. At some point I ended up in another menu but I could not reproduce that ever.

What I found:

ESC-Menu which seems to be some HP recovery thing or I did not find the advanced settings (also gives access to bootselect)

F9 boot medium select

Also it seems to either behave weird with keyboards or both the USB keyboards I tested are broken in a similar way.

Look at the illustration on the Rufus link for Windows installations.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

You set the partition scheme as GPT.

Target System - leave as is.

File system - NTFS.

Rufus builds the drive.

When the drive is ready, close out of Rufus.

Restart the PC.

Immediately press the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu and from that select the EFI USB flash drive that Rufus created and press the Enter key.

The PC should boot from the USB flash drive.

Now you may run into another issue...if you can boot from the drive and W7 starts to load files, you won't be able to use the keyboard and mouse to proceed any further unless you load the AMD USB3.1 drivers.

There are no W7 graphics adapter drivers for the Vega graphics.

I explored the driver file on the 705 G4 DM support page and here is the list of graphics adapters supported by the driver:

Okay, thanks.

That means I will also have to look into modifying the installer to include USB3 drivers.

You're very welcome.

Yes, that is correct.

I have zipped up and attached those drivers below:

I removed the W7 32-bit file folders.
