Hi @Nina_B1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you’ve forgotten the password to your HP desktop and do not have a recovery disk or USB drive, here are a few methods you can try to unlock your PC.

Use the Password Hint (if enabled)

  • On the login screen, enter an incorrect password.
  • If you had set up a password hint when creating the password, it will appear after a failed login attempt. Use the hint to try to remember the password.

Use Another Administrator Account (if available)

  • If there are other administrator accounts on the system, log in to one of them.
  • Once logged in, you can reset the password for the locked account via Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage Accounts.

Reset Password via Safe Mode (if possible)

  • Restart the computer and press F8 (or Shift + F8) during the boot-up to enter Advanced Boot Options.
  • Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  • When the Command Prompt opens, type:

net user [username] [newpassword]

  • Replace [username] with the account name and [newpassword] with your new password. Press Enter.

Use the Local Account Password Reset (Windows 10 and later)

  • On the login screen, click I forgot my password (if using a Microsoft account).
  • Follow the prompts to reset the password using your email or phone number associated with the account.

System Restore (if no other options work)

  • If none of the above methods work, you can try performing a system restore to a point where you remember the password.
  • Restart the computer and press F11 to enter Recovery Mode.
  • Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore and select a restore point.

Reset Your PC (last resort)

  • As a final option, you can perform a system reset that will reinstall Windows. This will erase your files, so use it only if other methods fail.
  • Restart the computer and press F11 to enter Recovery Mode.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC, and follow the instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
