Hello,
I have an HP Envy x360 2-in-1 laptop that recently stopped working. It had been unused for a few months, and I recently plugged it in to charge. The charging light turned on and it powered up normally. It began installing a Windows update, so I left it to finish. When I returned about 15-20 minutes later, the laptop was off and completely unresponsive.
Now it won’t turn on at all — no lights, no fan, no screen, not even a charging indicator when plugged in.
While it was updating, I briefly powered on a vacuum cleaner in the same room, which caused the lights in the room to flicker. I think this may have caused a power surge or drop that affected the laptop during the update process.
Since then, I’ve tried the following troubleshooting steps:
Hard reset
BIOS recovery key combos
Tested multiple outlets and chargers
None of these worked. The device remains totally unresponsive with no lights or signs of power.
I’m concerned the BIOS or power circuitry may have been damaged during the power fluctuation.
Please help me figure out what to do!!

Hi @sammii28
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for explaining everything so clearly—your instincts about a power surge during the update are spot-on, and it sounds like you’ve already tried all the right first steps. 😣
Let’s walk through a few deeper options that might help revive your HP Envy x360 or confirm whether it needs professional repair
Here's a list of troubleshooting steps you can consider:
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Disconnect the charger and remove any peripheral devices.
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to perform a hard reset.
- Try powering on the laptop again.
Check the Charger and Battery:
- Ensure the charger is working correctly by testing it with another compatible device.
- Inspect the charging port for any debris or damage.
- If possible, check the battery by plugging in the charger and observing if the charging light turns on. If it does not, the battery or charger might be faulty.
Remove and Reinsert the Battery (if accessible):
- If your model allows for battery removal, remove it for a few minutes and then reinsert.
- Connect the charger again and try powering on the laptop.
Connect to an External Monitor:
- If there's any indication that the laptop might be powered but not displaying anything, connect it to an external monitor to check if the display is malfunctioning.
BIOS Recovery:
- Since the laptop stopped after a Windows update, the BIOS may have been affected.
- Follow HP's instructions to perform a BIOS recovery. This often involves pressing specific keys during boot up, such as "Windows + B" or "V" with the power button, depending on your model.
Listen for Beeps or Check for Caps Lock blinking:
- Observe if the Caps Lock key blinks or if there are beep sounds when you try to power up. This can indicate hardware issues.
If the Windows update has caused deeper hardware or software issues, seeking assistance from our phone support team is recommended to prevent further damage.
