OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 880-040

I have just finished a full clean reset. But my profile is still there. Now it’s stating my PIN is no longer available. When I go to setup my new PIN I get “user profile service service failed to sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded” not sure why that profile is still there after a full reset..? Also now I’m not gaining access to safe mode or command prompt.

Hi @Bruce193

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I don't think your PC is bricked but something weird is going on. You should be starting from scratch after doing a reset.

I would check hardware using HP Startup diagnostics to check the drives and memory as well as all other components. I can't see why failing hardware would cause something like this but it never hurts to check this stuff.

A bad drive or faulty memory would probably cause a W10 reset failure.

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap "ESC".

Select "F2". Run system and component tests.

I guess some type of low level malware, albeit a poorly coded piece indeed, can cause this type of problem.

You might have to try a clean W10 install using the USB media creation tool at this Microsoft Site. I hope you had backed up data before you did the previous reset.

Boot to the USB drive. Install Windows clean outside of the operating system.

See if this helps.

I’ll give this a shot. I should note before this issue I had bought a new ssd. Used a new usb to make the media creation and my bios is locked behind a password for some odd reason. I have replaced my hdd in the past with no issue changing bot order but I can’t access anything in bios.  Appreciate the quick feedback

Hi @Bruce193

My pleasure.

I think HP ships some consumer PC using Windows Home with Device Encryption enabled by default. Device Encryption is similar to Windows Pro BitLocker.

You would have to disable Device Encryption in Control Panel if you can get to it.

I run W11 Pro. I don't use BitLocker. It seems to cause more harm than good.

I don't know why your PC's BIOS is locked if you have not set a BIOS password.

Try pulling the CR2032 MB battery to reset CMOS.

Hi @Bruce193

The 880-040 has a Ryzen 1800x which launched in 2017.

I don't know what is up with your PC. You might have some kind of UEFI/BIOS based malware.

I don't think HP was doing Device Encryption on W10 Home back in 2017 or 2018.

Regards
