I have the same issue with a desktop M01-F0016. It started about two weeks ago. I did a system restore to late April, which seemed to correct the issue, but a few days later, it returned. Next was a reinstall of Windows 10 which seemed to fix it. But once again, it returned about a week later. From reading the other posts, I saw that Windows Defender was probably at least part of the issue. I did another system restore. When I tried to simply turn off Windows Defender in settings, I got an instant blue screen. I then tried to install a different antivirus program. During install... blue screen. So I tried disabling Windows Defender through the registry editor. The computer restarted fine, and allowed me to install an antivirus program. So far, so good.....fingers crossed.

I just called Staples - the guy told me they will find out what is causing the problem before they replace anything. I told them what I have learned on here. Trying to fix this problem myself is a bit beyond my capabilities (I know just enough to be dangerous). Thank you.

If you are receiving the blue screen with just the message KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on a new HP machine, I wouldn't assume the STAPLES staff have any idea what they are talking about. Unfortunately, at least for me, it was still necessary to clean install windows and took some finagling to even do that. To be honest, I would take my computer to a neighborhood used computer dealer for a look before I would take it to Staples. That's kind of like taking an iphone to the apple store, the only thing they know how to do is swap things out. I wouldn't be surprised with a new hard drive installed if you don't encounter this problem again. It could even run for several days with no problems like mine did, and then start again. It seems pretty well established from just this forum that it's not a hardware issue. It seems there's a software issue at the base and (probably) even some device specific software/hardware compatability problem. But since many people have run windows and HP diagnostics on their hardware with no faults found, it would be a very weird coincidence indeed if your hard drive failed in the midst of this. Just sayin'.

Yeah I don't know why I got the error a few times when I did the reset, but the McAfee trial that came with the computer is the active antivirus now and Defender is turned off because of that.
So far so good, but we'll see.
But HP/Microsoft need to figure it out and fix it....all these probs people got going on, geez.

So I concur with everyone else who has said its windows defender that's causing the issue. I just tried installing Kaspersky to override Defender and after everything was installed, I got a BSOD. This time I was able to log back on, but I tried to manually shut down real time protection under window security and I got another BSOD.

new update just came out that seems to have solved the issue for me called KB4497165
This update solved it for me also. I would recommend this over messing with disabling antivirus and registry edits.

What update? And also how long have you been running and is windows defender on? Some of us had our system back up and running for 2 weeks before we got hit yesterday with the BSOD.
