ProDesk 600 G2
Linux

Hi,

I purchased my HP ProDesk 600 G2 not long ago and it came with both Windows 7 and Windows 10 DVDs. I prefer Linux as my primary OS so that is what is on it now. However I would like to run Windows 7 in VMware Player from Linux.

I installed VMware Player and then installed Windows 7 into a VM using the DVD that came with my PC, however,  in the Windows Activation section it says I need a valid product key. I do not see one on the Desktop unit itself, nor can I find one on the media I received.

Where can I get the Windows Product ID for my PC?

My Product No is P5U73UT#ABA

My Serial No is [Personal Information Removed]

Thanks,

Greg

Or even easier... (so you can help the next fellow)

# strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

As the "strings" command is included in just about every Linux install 😉

Blessings,

Greg

There should be a sticker on the case somewhere that has the product key, known as a COA sticker.

However, that might not work when using a VM, and if it doesn't then you're stuck as HP is not going to provide you a second product key.

Good Luck

I realize that the hardware appears differently in VMware and the Product ID may or may not work.

However, the thing is I don't have a COA sticker on the box. So I don't have a Product ID to try 😞

Is there a way to get my Product I from my Serial # or Order # or something?

If the PC came with Win7 preinstalled, it may have the product key encoded into the BIOS SLC table, and if that is the case, this utility might be able to retrieve it:  Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

Thanks for the idea 🙂 Going off that I found out in Linux you can just...

# hexdump -C /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

And it the last 29 characters 😉
