My hard drive failed. I have replaced it but I longer have my setup disks. I need my original product key. When I called Microsoft, I was told to call HP. I cant find a good support number for HP. How can I get my original Windows 7 64 bit Product key so I can re-activate it?

Greetings,
Welcome to the forum.
I am not a HP employee.
The Windows 7 OEM product key should be located on a sticker affixed to your PC's chassis. You need this product key to activate Windows.
Newer HP Windows 8.x and above PCs have the product key in the BIOS.
Did you install Windows 7 successfully? Asking this because you stated you don't have the Windows 7 recovery disks.
You can download Windows 7 at this site (Link). Heidoc (Link) used to provide Windows 7 OEM downloads. Windows 7 was not available the last time I checked this site.
You can convert the downloaded ISO to bootable media using this Microsoft tool (Link).
You can download Windows 7 drivers for your PC at this HP site (Link).

I loaded win 10 because I had upgraded to 10 when Microsoft was offering their upgrade program. I just found the key and it did not work on my Win 10 installation... Do I need to go back to 7, use the key and then upgrade again?

Hi.
Yes, you need to upgrade to Windows 10 from within Windows 7 if you have not done this.
A new, clean W10 installation would activate if you had previously updated from W7 and had successfully activated W10.
After upgrading from W7 to W10 you can do a clean install of W10 because you get a W10 digital license for the remaining life of the PC.
Microsoft has been allowing a free upgrade to W10 this way for years.
I don't know if this (the free upgrade) still works. Have not done this since about April of this year.

I did do a clean install of win 10 pro but it wouldn't activate. My previous upgraded version of W10 was activated. I think my original W7 version may have been the home version. Maybe I need to put W10 Home on it and then retry the W7 key.
