HP ENVY Phoenix 810-160 Desktop PC (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Did you ever hear a student use the excuse, “my hard drive crapped out” as an excuse to their professor? Well… I did before, and now I am that guy! As I am currently finishing my four year degree at university, my Envy Phoenix drops dead on me and I am left with only the community for help as I do not have the means to buy a new desktop currently. I am here for two main reasons. First, what is wrong and what are my options with your recommendations please? And secondly, is there any hope of getting any files such as assignments back? (Just in case it is a hard drive issue)

I did a hard drive diagnostic  and I do have some information to pass on.

SMART Check PASSED and Long DST FAILED

This just seems very sudden and ‘out of nowhere’ that my desktop took a crap on me.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you for your time,

Ryan

You mention the hard drive diagnostic report.  I assume that was run on your desktop so at least it boots into the diagnostic?

Did you remove the hard drive and run the diagnostic using another computer?   It is not clear to me.  Can the computer turn on but cannot boot the OS?

OK,  if computer was made after 2016 you can download the full OS install here

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

You should obtain a replacement drive such as WD 500gb SSD blue ($60 USD) and install the OS package that matches your system..

You should** also obtain an adapter SATA to USB so you can access the old 1TB drive and recover your files using a USB port.

If the files do not show up (the computer ate them) then there are fairly cheap forensic apps that possibly can recover files from a corrupted drive such as "File Scavenger".  It is a free download and can be tested but any file larger than about 64kb needs to get a license to download.  There are probably other but I do not know of any free ones.

if the cloud does not have your software backup you can use Microsoft win10 ISO but it will not have all the "free" stuff that came with the system.  There are also resellers of HP software that can provide the "original" disks or more likely the "missing" one.

Good Luck

** Once the system can boot into the new drive you could attach the old drive to a spare SATA port on the motherboard and avoid buying USB adapter.  I recommend the USB adapter.
